At $27 a bag it's pricey but I think it's the best natural lump charcoal around. Big chunks and doesn't spark bad.

Don't remember the brand. But whatever the cheaper stuff they have at Goodwood hardware is great.

Would be interesting to light a certain amount of pounds of that and regular charcoal both in a BGE and see if is really worth the price compared to regular charcoal.

Oh I don't have one, just curious how regular would hold up against their brand.

Lump is better, but people use briquettes because they're easier and you can light with lighter fluid.

I like Royal Oak - make sure its the made in USA bag. Much larger lump than the BGE bags and I like the smaller bags that help keep it free of moisture, which greatly affects lump.

I think BGE charcoal is nothing but Cowboy Lump and that is terrible lump charcoal.
I personally use Stubb's all natural briquettes from Lowe's. It stacks really well, doesn't produce nearly as much ash as Kingsford and how no noticeable odor.

Royal oak makes BGE charcoal for what it's worth. The bag even says, "Manufactured exclusively for the Big Green Egg Co., Royal Oak".
RO 10 lb bag is 6+ bucks at Walmart. The Walmart is a bit smaller pieces. For cooking a steak or pizza at high heat or other such applications the RO gets a lot hotter, due to the increased surface area of the smaller pieces.
I've never seen enough difference to justify the double cost.

I have a primo XL ceramic pit. On low and slow cooks I've run my pit 24 hours on a 10 lb bag of RO lump. I still had a bit less than 1/2 of it left. I'll qualify this by saying I was using a digi Q.

A girl I went to highschool owned royal oak and they always had a ton of it in their garage. If it really is that good I may need to snag a bag next time.
