I think you still have to realize one thing. We are still talking about kids who want to be close "enough" to home that they can have family and/or friends within a short distance. I think someone already said 8 hr drive is the honeypot and i agree.

As of tonight on Rivals- UF has 18 commits w/ 9 OOS incl PA and IL Bama has 27 commits w/ 17 OOS incl AZ, MD, TN, and 8 from GA. LSU has 20 commits with 5 OOS, incl 2 from GA, and 2 from TX. There are 14 players listed in the Rivals top 50 that are undecided. We are only on the list of ONE! Sorry, but that is CRAP! We don't have more resources than Purdue or FSU? I think there are a lot of fish getting away without an attempt. Whatever.
Thanks for doing the legwork I thought was the truth. I'd bet the lion's share of those OOS's for UF and Bama are 5 stars. That's all I was trying to say. Of course we need to try to keep every impact in state player in our fold.
However, the recruiting game is changing rapidly, and just focusing on players who live within driving distance, especially when those who live 30 minutes from campus go to your biggest rival.
I mean, who are we recruiting hard late right now to try to fill out the class?
Edwards, Thompson (TX)
Patterson (SC)
Howard (FL) well maybe hard
Alexander, Winston, Elston (AL - not from Mobile)
Liggins (northern MS)
All out of state players. Now that LC has signed, we're pretty much done in state. My point is that there nothing left here to fill out the class. So, why not go OOS early for the 5 starts and fill the class our with easier to get LA players later on.
See some programs have this thing, he likes to get footholds, you get a kid from Maryland, it makes getting the second kid so much easier. At least get scouts out to the HS football factories that are dispersed throughout the country, it's money well spent.

we need a outside of region master recruiter.
LSU recruits the golden triangle of high school talent. Thats been working pretty well so far and I say we stick to it.
Every once in a while we go to Florida or Ohio/Michigan, but Houston, Louisiana and South Mississippi is our bread and butter and what we need to concentrate on.
If you can say anything about OOS recruiting, I'd say that we need to open the door to Mobile again. We used to get a few kids from there, but it's bama territory again.

Our early offers every year go to mostly out of state players. I think it is erroneous to conclude that the staff is not targeting out of state talent. We probably pull back from OOS recruits who don't respond to the early offers, but we are in on OOS players every year.

There are 14 players listed in the Rivals top 50 (4 and 5 star athletes) that are undecided. We are only on the list of ONE! Those 13 aren't worth a phone call? UF, Bama, Auburn thought some of those kids were worth a shot. Why not us? Why not a call for interest? Maybe LSU did, maybe not.

Well, for you all who think that recruiting in state and regionally, here's some food for thought for 2013....
just as a reference point, 247 lists the top two players in LA as #77 and #103 nationwide. I'd hardly call that a deep pool - and neither has committed to LSU, although there are offers
Of the Top 10 recruits, almost all have LSU offers or "show interest" - but guess what? Almost all of them also show interest in - you guessed it - Alabama.
Now we know they won't all get Bama offers (most won't), but like I said very early on in this post, state allegiances are important, but not like it used to be.
I know that I can't convince many that the old "throw up the fence/driving distance" guard that it's not the way to go. So I encourage you all to look for yourself at the top 100 athletes in the 247 for 2013 and see where they are either committed to, or are interested in and/or been offered.
Despite the BCSNCG, we still went 13-1, have great facilities, great coaching (well, we do), and a great tradition. We need to build on this season and get some of the 77 players ranked ahead of our state's best player.
