LINK

How accurate is this article? I enjoy TBBT and while I wouldn't call myself a geek, I do enjoy things that are "geekish". Are their any true "geeks" that can give some feedback on this?

Barenaked Ladies aren't a geek band? Really? Admitted, they aren't TMBG (or Jonathan Coulton), but geeks pretty much are BNL's core audience. Most of the points were reaches - as if there is some monolithic geek culture. Sure, they are drawn as overborad stereotypes, but it's a sitcom for godsakes. It's not aiming that high. It's not, well, Community. It's a pleasant little trifle, and yes, it uses outsized geek stereotypes to tell jokes. If that bothers you, you need professional help.

The show is not satire. It has never claimed to be satire. If it was, yes, it fails totally at that. But as a mediocre show good for a few laughs... well, it's fine. Hardly offensive, while also not being ground breaking in any way.

Though I do completely agree on their point about Leslie, and women in general. Leslie was a positive geek woman character, far superior to Bernadette or Blossom (or whatever her character name is).

The real complaint is that the show aims for the middle and hits it. It could be worse, it could be Two and a Half Men.

:( I kind of pride myself on that. :(

I read your link, and the guy has a lot of valid points. My favorite one was other geek shows are better.

Sorry. I can be a geek, but I haven't watched this show. Too busy doing science.

This one guy i'm in school with (engineering) was talking about the show. And I said how I'm not really a fan. Dude says "I like it, but I get the jokes. I like science."

I wanted to slap him.

Bottom line. The show has some mildly funny moments, but it also has a lot of moments when it tries to be funny and misses very lamely. The fact that the dude said that makes him an idiot. The overly geeky science shite about the show is hardly ever really funny. The jewish horny guy is what makes the show funny,

Oh, okay, they're BNL now? We need a shorthand for the Barenaked Ladies. That's how fundamental they are.

For the show to be a "hit", it has to maintain a sense of middle ground. If it was trying to appeal to just geeks, then I would agree with the article more, but I appreciate the acting in the show more than anything. Not just anyone could pull off a character like Sheldon Cooper.

I'm not a geek, but most of the complaints in that article weren't even "geek specific." Things like the laugh track and "sheldonmania" are very general complaints. The only legitimate complaint that they had was that they get some of the references wrong.

The column has a lot of merit.

Particularly 1, 10, 8, and 9.

Personally, as someone who can be something of a geek, I find the show to be rather insulting. That's why Reason 1 is my main gripe with the show.

I also think they try too hard, which is somewhat alluded to in the reference Points.

I don't think that it's trying to appeal to geeks; if it were, it wouldn't be so insulting...

Meh, as a tech geek i find the show funny at times. I know lots of non geek people that love this show. IMO this show is not for geeks/nerds but rather everyone else.
