Is it a foregone conclusion that he'll retire at Bama? I see him staying at Bama for the duration of his contract and then retiring when his contract ends in 2017. Hopefully Kirby stays at Bama until then so Saban can groom him to be the next Alabama head coach. I just feel like Smart's different from the rest of Saban's assistants and that he'll be a great head coach when he gets the opportunity. I just hope it's with Bama instead of another school.

He looks pretty damn happy with what he's doing right now. I think he'll be at Alabama for a long time to come.

I think we name Kirby HC in waiting and Saban retires after the 2015 season. He actually looked genuinely happy when they gave him the Gatorade bath tonight.

He will be there at least another 5-7 years.

He's likely waiting on the Bama job or another big one... Texas, USC, Miami... But you never can tell

I would like to see Smart stick around, but it is not going to happen. He is ready to be a HC and he is very deserving of it.

Coach Saban will retire an Alabama man and I hope it is not anytime too soon.

I've literally never seen him so elated as he was in the closing minutes and post-game tonight.

What is Saban going to do when he retires? This is a man who watched film on Christmas day after everyone went home. I doubt he can turn his personality 180 degrees unless he has a medical issue.

I have no idea when he'll retire; but I've thought he would retire at Bama since his first day there. He took a normal upgrade path to the NFL, which is most coach's dream, and that didn't work out, he stepped back down one level.

I think with everything happening earlier in the year with the tornadoes and everything that tonight was something he could give back to the ppl of Ttown and that made him truly happy

Why do people think Saban is the one coach who can just retire and walk away from coaching... Saban is football it's what he breathes.. better than anyother out there. He will die coaching.

Kirby is the man but someone please list the top 5 head coach in waiting situations. Who has gone from hciw to great coach?

I don't think they used the that term in 1973, but Tom Osborne had a smooth transition at Nebraska when he took over for Bob Devaney.

Saban will definitely retire at Bama. However I always thought that Saban signed the contract extension until 2017 he could be at Alabama until that date before retiring. 2017 was meant to be his exit date.

Exactly. Smart will get a job somewhere before Saban retires or whatever. Maybe he will get a HC job at some lesser program and Bama can bring him back after Saban steps down

Smart needs seasoning. He needs to go somewhere and learn what it takes to be a headcoach. Now, when he leaves, it should be established that IF he is successful we would love to have him back when Nick retires.

You've read my mind. The Devaney/Osborne situation is exactly what I'm envisioning with Saban and Smart. I want Kirby to be the head coach at Alabama for the next 15-20 years after Saban retires. He's only 36. If Kirby takes over in 2018, he'll still be a young coach at 42. If he stays with Saban for that long, he'll be more ready to take over the reins.

I've thought this for a while but after tonight Alabama would be dropping the ball if they didn't hire a top 3 coach in the country when it comes time to do so. A coach would be absolutely brain dead to turn down the job.
