I eat local way more than I eat chains on average. And I cook even more often than I eat out.
Sometimes you'd have to really go out of your way, or be anti-social, to not eat a meal or two at a chain restaurant. It's not usually worth that to me.
Unless some friends invited me to Olive Garden... then I'd politely decline.

and chain is such a broad definition .. i like to hang out at the bar at BJ's Brewhouse with friends and chew the fat with everyday joes about whatever ballgames are on the TV .. that's a chain .. i can't do that at the bar at Stroube's .. so it would be silly to completely discount patronizing chains for even people with the means but not the interest in eating at better places ..
