Below are the Top 25 passing teams in America ranked by passing ypg.
Next to their respective passing ypg are their total defense ypg.

What pathetic defense. 22 of the top 25 passing teams give up over 350 ypg total defense. Over half those teams give up over 400 yds total defense.

All of these Jello Heads nationally talking about how their team has such a great passing offense. Well, I guess they do have a great passing offense. It's really amazing at how bad the defenses are on the top passing teams in America. These teams have defenses that absolutely suck. These top passing teams play horrible defense. LSU and Alabama fans would have their coach fired within 2 seasons if they played defense as bad as these top 25 passing teams.

There are 13 teams from BCS conferences ranked among the top 25 passing teams in America. 10 of those teams reside in the Pac 12 and Big 12 conferences. No surprise here.

See below the top 25 passing teams in America ranked in order followed by their total defense ranking. Looks like the quick scoring results in a very tired defense to me. They all suck at defense.

1 Houston 443.8 passing ypg / total defense 386 ypg #63

2 Oklahoma State 386.3 passing ypg / total defense 445 ypg #106

3 Arizona 370.3 passing ypg / total defense 460 ypg #110

4 Oklahoma 365.1 passing ypg / total defense 383 ypg #61

5 Baylor 351.5 passing ypg / total defense 488 ypg #116

6 Texas Tech 345.0 passing ypg / total defense 485 ypg #114

7 West Virginia 341.8 passing ypg / total defense 340 ypg #27

8 Western Michigan 337.3 passing ypg / total defense 434 ypg #99

9 Washington State 322.3 passing ypg / total defense 409 ypg #82

10 Arizona State 316.7 passing ypg / total defense 422 ypg #90

11 Boise State 309.4 passing ypg / total defense 321 ypg #18

12 Hawai'i 308.8 passing ypg / total defense 387 ypg #67

13 Arkansas 307.8 passing ypg / total defense 371 ypg #52

14 Miami (Ohio) 299.1 passing ypg / total defense 363 ypg #47

15 USC 294.2 passing ypg / total defense 374 ypg #54

16 Troy 291.3 passing ypg / total defense 465 ypg #113

17 Texas A&M 287.9 passing ypg / total defense 386 ypg #65

18 Arkansas State 287.8 passing ypg / total defense 325 ypg #21

19 Oregon State 286.8 passing ypg / total defense 411 ypg #84

20 East Carolina 286.1 passing ypg / total defense 376 ypg #55

21 Clemson 284.8 passing ypg / total defense 379 ypg #58

22 SMU 277.8 passing ypg / total defense 351 ypg #37

23 San Jose State 276.8 passing ypg / total defense 425 ypg #93

24 Central Mich. 274.2 passing ypg / total defense 428 ypg #95

Passing teams usually don't possess the ball for very long. Therefore their defenses are on the field for the majority of the game.

Example: Oklahoma State's defense is on the field more than 110 other defenses.

Why does it matter though?

The correllation is that 22 of the top 25 passing teams in the nation give a pathetic 350+ ypg average on defense. Over half of those give up over 400+ yds per game. Do you see that as a coincidence or can you see a trend?
What does it mean when a high powered offense scores every 4 or 5 plays from 50 yards out versus a team like LSU that routinely sustains 9 and 10 play drives and keeps it's defense off the field ?
Not much rest for the defense.
Defense is worn out in the second half.

I kind of get this to a degree but there is also an element of circular logic in it as well. If the defense had more 3 and outs or stopped the run better they wouldn't be on the field so much whether the offense scored quickly or not.

I think he is wanting to say , The SEC plays a differnt style of football. We like Defense as much as we like offense . The is game 9-6 was my kijnd of football. The rematch , I think we are going to see the offensive players trying to prove that they are just as good as the defnesive players are . In the SEC we have good players on both sides of the ball. The rest of college football. likes to out score the other team . Just make one stop and keeping scoring . More exciting . Like i have told a few espn writers , a 42 to 35 game means neither team was a complete team . No good players on defense .

SEC is more about a balanced attack.
Arkansas is really the only exception to that rule in the SEC. Some teams pass more than others but almost every SEC would prefer to run the ball efficiently if they can.

Ehhh, its a pretty dumb correlation. The way to beat the spread; however, is to have a line that can cause pressure without blitzing, and corners good enough to make mistakes pay. Add that to a ball possession offense (keep the players on the sideline and force them to try to stay peaked up) and you have the spread's kryptonite.

I would see the correlation if the OP had connected the passing ypg of those teams to the total defenses of all the opponents they played (too much work!).

You dont usually see SEC offenses in that list. The philosophy is run the ball first. And everyone saw what happens when a pass happy offense (arky, UGA) faces a defense like LSU and Bama.

But I still dont see how it matters if an air it out offense has a bad defense.

while this is true it is also true that their defenses are on the field longer because they can't force 3 and outs. the fact is that most of these teams place their best players on offense. in the SEC, DL and DB's are valued very highly. recruiting and coaching are the best and a priority when putting a team together.
