Does anyone have any experience with these? I've researched them and they seem to be pretty well built for the price. This is the one I just purchased:

For the price, their a nice buy. It's gonna be a great gun for years to come for you. It's just not a higher end 1911.

I know, but this is my first 1911, so I don't need a Kimber/Wilson Combat/Dan Wesson to start off with. Not that I could afford one right now anyways

I'd strongly suggest you check [link=(Budsgunshop.com)]Bud's Gunshop[/link]. They have amazing prices and you can pick it up at your FFL dealer of choice.
RIA 1911s are great for the money. There are no bells and whistles, but if all you want to do is sling a .45 downrange, it's the perfect bullet launcher.

I had a gunsmith tell me you could get a remington 1911 with a Forged barrel 4 about the same price as the Rock Island which is not forged, is this true?

I found Buds to be about $100 higher than Lanbo's I paid $520 for my G30 with shipping to my FFL. Ordered Thursday, shipped Friday, supposed to be delivered today.

The Remington is going to be more expensive. Just for comparison, a blued, GI Spec RIA is going to run about $400. LINK
A similar Remington is going to run $605. LINK
I realize Davidson's prices are usually a little more expensive, but it probably cancels out as this model is on sale. For some reason, Bud's is not working for me right now.
I don't worry to much about the forged vs non-forged barrel argument. Yes, the Remington is forged. I don't know whether the RIA is forged or non-forged. I do know that Ruger, for example, has made a lot of money and acquired an enviable reputation and has done so selling a lot of handguns that had non-forged (investment cast barrels).
OTOH, the Remington and RIA look different. The Remington has a nicely blued and refined finish. The RIA has a dull, Parkerized finish (although they call it "matte black"). Nevertheless, the RIA is usually a very solid gun. I don't have an RIA, but I do have a Citadel compact 1911; both are made by the same manufacturer in the Philippines, Armscor. Despite the Parkerized finish, I've been very pleased w/ my Citadel.

What he said...
If you don't mind not having all the fixens, then a Rock Island will suit your needs just fine.

For that price point I would look at the Metro Arms American Classic

I've got one of these in the Commander model (4.25" barrel). It's a very nice looking gun. It has a pretty, deep blue finish. The trigger is a little nicer and lighter than the Citadel's. While the Citadel's sights are all black (or actually dark grey...), the AC has three dot sights. When I bought the Citadel, I wanted a compact 1911. The AC version ("Amigo") had just hit the market and was mostly unavailable. The Citadel's been a nice gun, but I like the AC more.
Here are some AC models, including a full size w/ Novak type sights and Beavertail grip safety like in the picture of your OP. LINK =

I know, they are really making a name for themselves.
Fun fact about the Metro Arms, they are made in Colt's old factory in the Philippines
