Cholly Mac was a class act. The main plus to Mac is he kept LSU at a very high level longer than any other coach. Sent alot of players to the pros. Knew defense. Took LSU to some damn good bowls and brought a lot of good recognition to the school. he was also a top notch defense as he always had a good one.

He doesn't deserve the rap he's getting from some of you in this thread as you weren't around for him. He probably stayed a couple of years too long as the program was getting a little stale and we were happy for Sun Bowls and Tangerine Bowls. Yes, Cholly made questionable decisions about playing certain qbs and the Woodley/Ensminger merry go round drove everyone crazy, but the point is, he kept LSU football at a high level for a long time.

However, the main reason he was canned was because he played Fulmer to Bear's Spurrier. He could not beat the Bear. But then unless you were General Neyland or Ara Parseghian, no one did either did back then.

Don't give me the crap about Bear and cheating. Bear was better at spotting talent. He was better at hiring assistants. Given the assistant coaches who went through Bear v. Cholly Mac, its no wonder Cholly kept getting beat. Do you younger guys have a clue who coached for Bear over the years? Then there was the fact Bear was more aggressive in adapting to the game. See his use of black players and also changing to the wishbone. by the way, his wishbone was one he threw out of- see how many of his wishbone qb's made it to the pros and stayed there. And lets be real, bear was a better defensive coach although slightly. See the 1979 game, we couldn't get past the 50 while losing 3-0.

I think Miles will turn out to be a better coach as he recruits better, hires assistants that tend to go to better jobs, and is keeping the program at an even higher level.

But then again, Cholly Mac never got the kind of support in terms of money and facilities Miles is getting either. For that you can thank Saban and Emmert.

edit: and by the way, wrangler, if you are going to use Mac, then get it right: its Cholly Mac, not Charlie Mac.

Correct me if I am wrong (tell the truth though), but I think you were not around in the 60's. I was an LSU student from spring '63 to spring '69 and I have always followed the Tigers.

A regular season was 10 games back then and his record was helped tremendously by beating 7 inferior opponents every year (Texas A & M, Rice, Kentucky, Miss St, Tulane, etc) and having a losing record against Bama, Ole Miss and Florida.

He did have some good wins in his tenure, but he could have done a lot better.
