Why are people so quick to make judgements? He was wanting a financial backing for facilities and coaching staff. Considering UM's financial problems with the football program, it wouldn't surprise me if they couldn't come to an agreement on that after a handshake.

If you're smart you get that agreement before the handshake.

This is a most confusing article. The headlines say that Coach McElwain TOOK the job and then backed out of the job. Inside the article it states that he interviewed, impressed them and the individual stated that he "BELIEVES" he would take the job. Thats a far cry from taking the job and then backing out! How about some truth in reporting for a change.

Agreement in principal. Then, some of the principals decide to amend the agreement or he got a bad vibe.

Either way. No contract was signed. No foul.

Memphis and Fresno State are using the same search firm, Eastman & Beaudine, which Ole Miss used to help fill its vacancy with Hugh Freeze. The firm also is handling the search for a head coach at Arizona State.

Ole Miss, Arizona State, and now Memphis have all had issues deciding on one guy now.

Sounds like a shitty search firm.

Why does a major university even need a search firm anyway? Isn't that part of the duties of an A.D. to have connections and working relationships in his own industry?

It's not like there are any fresh college grads that are qualified to be a D1 HC or are there any candidates overseas. I'm surprised more D1-A and DII HC's don't get the call from places like Memphis, SMU, Tulane etc.

Well, Ole Miss doesn't have an AD right now. I can't speak for Arizona State and Memphis.

probably, so said search firm can contact the coaches agent without permission from the university if he would be interested in said job.

Exactly. Then the coach can honestly say that he never talked to said university. There is a need for a middleman in these searches.

Anyone remember the search group that got us Saban? Seems we wanted someone who turned us down, so they said how about this guy, Nick Saban. Turned out pretty well for LSU. He was not a great steal, as well as I recall.

At least he didn't take the job, announce the decision, have a press conference and meet the players and back out two days later.
