The federal district court in Northern California found that Wells Fargo's large-to-small posting order for debit card transactions was an unfair and deceptive practice.

The reason banks do it this way is because usually the larger dollar items are the most important (house pmt,car pmt)and then work their way down. Who in their right mind would want their house pmt returned just so that $45.00 check to walmart will clear.

Ms. Gutierrez could have used a credit card and avoided all that by keeping a better record of her bank transactions, spending less, or maintained a higher demand deposit balance. I don't get consumers' love of debit cards, especially if they maintain low balances subject to easily becoming overdrawn. A law suit over mismanaging her own money, what's next?

As an offset I went into a Wells Fargo branch Friday and discussed something with them and they credited my account $11 and gave me a better rate on something else. If you maintain a PMA account with them you get 100 stock trades for free with WellsTrade, that's a good value these days. Two way street.
