Woodson playing on offense is what really put him over the top. If we could let TM7 get in a couple plays just to get the stats, he would def get it next year. That is if he has another big year.

Thats not the difference. I happy TM7 is going to New York for the heisman, but the heisman is a bunch of bullshite. Nothing more than a popularity contest. Its whoever the media pimps the hardest. He played for Michigan, thats why he won it. Anyone other than Peyton Manning winning the heisman that year was a joke.

It seemed to me that ESPN just wanted to find out how much influence they had over college football. They actively campaigned for Woodson most of the season and really ramped it up toward the end...similar to their Bama in the title game campaign this season.

Here's what Tyrann needed to win this year:

1) 2-3 more picks

2) a big play in the Bama game

3) to have not gotten suspended

With the hype he had at mid season had he not got suspended this could have been closer than expected. With the attention he will get next year he has a serious shot.

If all it takes is for a defensive player to line up for a few snaps and score a couple of TDs on offense, then I have to agree that this is the dumbest award around. I just wish they would call it what it is: the QB or RB with the best stats on one of the top teams in America.

As I've been saying for the last two weeks, these jokers love to talk about the need for a Heisman moment. TM7 had more of those in the last two weeks than all of these other finalists combined had all season in the biggest of big games at the absolute most pivotal time when they were needed. End of discussion.

He got held out by team rules and still played 12 games.

RGIII is the only guy really worthy of beating him out for the award.

this. 1) missing the game. 2) and the CONSTANT mention thereafter that he and the other miscreants were doing illegal DRUGS.

I am still hoping TM7 wins DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR.

I didn't think they were illegal drugs. They are banned in some states, not in others. I don't see why this should matter one iota in recognizing one of the greatest seasons by a DB in the history of the sport, at least equal to the Woodson's Heisman winning season. He didn't miss a meaningful game, and made all of his biggest plays in the biggest games of the season.

He was going both ways for quarters...not a few plays in the entire year...don't confuse his 11 catches with the idea that he only lined up 11 times.

"Charles Woodson was the best college football player in America in 1997 by any measure you want to go by. Michigan doesn’t win the national championship without him, while Tennessee lost to Florida and Nebraska by a combined score of 75 to 37.

Woodson came up with the key pick to beat Michigan State, came up with the punt return for a score and an interception at the goal line to beat Ohio State by six, and he finished the year with eight interceptions and four touchdowns including a big interception against Ryan Leaf and Washington State in the Rose Bowl (which came after the Heisman was awarded, of course)."

Does LSU win the National Title without TM...that's the question? Did they need a big play from him to beat Bama? That's the question?

Charles Woodson didn't pad stats - he decided games! I have feeling LSU still blows out their season opponents without TM.

the suspension killed his momentum too
Herbstreit was promoting TM7 as #1 at the time, but went away with the suspension.
