So admittedly, I don't get on here often, but I figured this would be the best place to ask this question.

So it looks like it'll be LSU/Bama in the NC should LSU win in the SECCG. Should we win the SECCG, go to the NC, and lose to Bama, how could the Tide honestly be considered national champs? It would be a loss to each other, however, we would actually be SEC champs as well. I know everyone wants a rematch and all, but if we've both beaten each other, why is it that their win would allow them to call themselves national champs, but ours would not?

(NB: I'm not saying we're going to lose, or even that I think we will, just posing the question.)

Gump's answer:
Because LSU didn't really beat us in Tuscaloosa. We beat ourselves.

Kind of stupid if you think about it. I mean if you are a great team why would you beat yourself? Why lose to another team on purpose?
But then Gump logic isn't the strongest.

I'm not the greatest on college football history, so I don't know if this particular situation has ever happened before, and it was a question out of pure curiosity.

The closest is probably 2001, although it wasn't for the NC. LSU is considered the SEC champion even though TN beat us in the regular season and had a better record.

In 96 Fl beat FSU in a rematch and was declared NC. This was pre BCS. If the BCS was in place FL would not have played FSU and Spurrier would still not have a NC.

#1 vs #2 - whoever wins is the champ

If you don't like this system, you'll fricking hate a playoff.

You do realize everything you people hate about playing Bama in the national title game is exactly what a payoff does, except expands it to more teams and rewards you less for being in the SEC.

In a playoff scenario, LSU could go undefeated, then have to play Va Tech for the right to play the Bama/OSU winner.

They would have the same right that the NY Giants had after beating previously unbeaten New England in the Super Bowl. The Pats beat the Giants in the regular season that year.

The same way they could get voted into the BCSNCG without a division or conference championship.

Didn't say I didn't like the system, just a question. I honestly do think that LSU and BAMA are 1 and 2.
