Actually for maids and baby sitters it's a little more complicated. See page 3 of LINK

For example, I happen to have a maid and over the course of the year I pay her about $1400. According to the above link, I do not have to withhold or pay anything at all. I have little doubt that she doesn't rush to pay tax herself but that is her responsibility under the law, not mine.

I do happen to know she is legal, so I'm clear there too.
Gambling - I actually do track this and this past year I lost $10. I didn't bother claiming the deduction.

So there.

Regarding taxes on online purchases, generally retailers I shop with do charge sales tax.

I'm sure you have your I-9 & W-4 on file, and examined two forms of id, even though she was paid less than $1400.

I'm not trying to be a smartass, just trying to demonstrate how easy it is to be a lawbreaker.
