Has anyone come across any studies or articles that prove this theory?
And for the sake of conversation which universities have had spikes in enrollment from football or basketball success recently?

There have actually been lots of studies. Also just do a google search for "Flutie Effect."
ETA: I will add that it's a bit difficult to isolate enrollment spikes with athletic success... lots of variables can be involved. However, it's considered a given by lots of administrators.

It isn't surprising. Televised sporting events are basically free advertising for the schools involved, and better teams are on TV more often.

Kids at the U still go there because of the football history despite how bad they suck now (trust me on this one) and same for lots of schools such as ND. I think if you ever get to that top tier for at least a few years, its only going to help that school's admission numbers in the future

UConn got tremendous support from the State (UConn 2000) and saw a huge jump in applications when they started getting good in the 90s. They were a mediocre public institution, now are one of the Top 25 I believe.
