THIS IS WRONG. Penn State and Paterno should NOT be highlighted on ESPN

ESPN said in the pre-game show "that they know that the kids that were sexually abused are victims but so are the Penn state players are victims." There is NO comparison. This is wrong. I don't understand how they can compare the 2 groups and idolize Paterno. Paterno and Penn state turned their backs on these kids and these kids lives have been ruined. This is really sad that so many are supporting a football program and university that turned their backs on sexually abused children.

They werent comparing those two. They are just saying the players suffer from this whole situation as well

That's not the players' fault.

Three or four men made terrible decisions and you're gonna hold it against the entire university and the team? All of which had nothing to do with what happened. Paterno got fired so I'm not sure what he has to do with this thread.

An entire university and football program did not turn their backs on sexually abused children.

What about the players who were or presently at universities that have been or presently being penalized by the NCAA.
SMU was given the death penalty. Tulane basketball was penalized for ticket scalping, Southern Cal was penalized for Bush accepting money and gifts and Ohio State was penalized for tattoos and players selling rings but Penn State players are victims and what sepearates these Penn State players from the penalized institutions players.
I think it is totally wrong to put up such a charade as to idolize Paterno, Penn State and call its players victims.
If your kid was a victim of these crimes, I'm sure you would feel different. Can you imagine what the victims are thinking after seeing the adoration of Paterno and glorification of the Penn State football. It's only a game, but to these kids - it is life. These kids have to live their life being tormented by mental pictures of these terrible acts. The Penn State players just play a game.

All of this is because of some player's actions so it's nothing like Penn State's issues.

I think your reading way more into it than you need to
Its sad that there are guys that will end their careers in the middle of this scandle because of a sicko coach and dumbass coverups by the coaches and administration. Obviously not as sad as the kids that got hurt but still sad

this is such a false argument.

Paterno did not assault these kids. In retrospect, he could have done more to report crimes already committed.

All of those universities and / or players were cheating by giving / getting improper benefits.
What does that have to do with PSU?

I'll actually buy that.
Like one former player said. He said "Sandusky is who I wanted to grow up to be". He said that because he didn't have a father, his coaches were his role models and father figures.
Now, imagine finding out your idol was diddling boys and your other idol knew about it and did nothing.
That's some heavy shite.

oh yes Paterno did nearly as much as the perp friend of his... Paterno knew all this back in 1998 and that is why he had his star Defensive Coordinator retire in 1999.... and made him "PROMISE" he would not do it again..... what is this kindergarden... he is at "CRIMINAL FAULT" for allowing his friend to continue this for the last 13 years!!!! IT IS A DISGRACE FOR ESPN TO KEEP SHOWING ALL THIS TRIBUTE TO PATERNO!!! Paterno is not was never a good man... if he was he would have stood up for the victims on the spot....

This was a MAJOR cover-up by the coaches and administration. There is a telephone recording of Sandusky apologizing. There was a legal process to go after Sandusky but it was dropped. You have an Assistant Coach who actually witnessed Sandusky with a boy in the shower performing a sex act. You have 27 pages of this heinous crime in legal process hands. Penn State acted like any major corporation protecting their 80 milion dollars in revenue and brand name, they tried to sweep it under the rug. These coaches continue to recruit players under the PATERNO paternal model. But Paterno could have put an end to this 13 years ago. But he chose not to. How can Paterno, a grandfather of 17 children, turn his back and act as if nothing happened and continued to coach while Sandusky was running free doing his thing. He continued to coach in pursuit of breaking Eddie Robinson's record which he broke last week. If he would have coached today, he would have tied Alonzo Staggs record of most games coached. The players did nothing wrong and they must feel betrayed but that is NO different than any other university that was penalized by the NCAA. I feel sorry for these players but they can move on, these sexually assaulted victims must live with this for the rest of their life. But not only that, these victims will now be known by Penn state fans and community as the children who took down mighty Penn State. This is really sad. Can you imagine the pressure? Penn State deserves the death penalty just like other institutions who did a lot less than cover up sexual assault of kids.

It has been a bit pathetic. People give more of a rat's arse for a freaking pathetic excuse of a human being in Joe Pa than for the freaking kids he allowed to be raped in his locker room.
The commercials by PSU are also pathetic. Prove it before you start saying things you are proud of, because your administration has shown that for the past 15+ years that it cared more about your school's image than the safety and lives of innocent at-risk children.

This is also false. A classic case of 20/20 hindsight. Based on the info we have, in 98 Sandusky was caught showering with a kid and admitted it to the kids mom, he was forced to resign and was never charged with a crime. There has be no evidence presented so far that says Paterno knew, in 1999 that JS was sexually assaulting kids. After that, he was told of incidents but that doesn't mean he knew about it going back to 98.

no, he;s not, at least so far he hasn't been charged with anything. And again, it retrospect its 13 years, but there is no proof he or anyone knew anything it 98. Its all clear after the fact, but if Sandusky was investigated and not charged, because we NOW know there were times post 98 that someone allegedly witnessed Sandusky sexually assaulting a child we can put the pieces together.

I don't think they were comparing the players and the abused children. By saying they're both victims they aren't saying they're victims of the same magnitude.
What happened to these children is a horrific tragedy, and I have a 12 year old son, a boy the same age as the victims. It's still unfair for the players to possibly have their hopes and dreams to play in the NFL dashed due to something that they had zero knowledge of. That's what would happen if the program was shut down, right?
I didn't see the pregame show you are referring to, but the ESPN halftime interview in no way idolized or supported Paterno, or the university administration. Aaron Taylor even shared his disdain as a someone who was abused at the age of 5. Every commentator agreed that this is an awful situation and supported the firing of Paterno.

What else could he have done 13 years ago? Ban the guy from campus? OK, that's fine, maybe they should have, but that's it. He was forced to resign. No charges were brought at that time.

I understand penn state players and coaches trying to come together, they have no other choice. But in no way can the players and fans and paterno claim to be a victim.

It's obvious that Paterno and the admin looked the other way and tried to pretend nothing was a big deal. The grand jury report shows that they took mqueery's claims and watered them down to the point of "no big deal." It was a group of men trained in the art of sweeping stuff under the rug.
