It is conceivable that the process could lead the trustees to consider a total shutdown of the football program as the best way to excise all that is wrong.

Consider the cancellation of the football program for a period of at least two years. It might not be possible to establish a new culture without the total elimination of the old one. A two-year hiatus might be the only way to eliminate a systemic problem.

They need to end their 2011 season now.

It appears the Booster Cult is so strong and pervasive it cannot be contained, even if they actually tried. If that's the case the only way to fix this is to just turn it off for a few years and restart later.

I think they would be better off firing everyone in the administration even remotely aware of what may have been going on.

Obviously, they need an entirely new coaching staff.

i would say the whole athletic dept needs to shutdown. they will probably lose hundreds of millions of dollars in lawsuits and sponsor dollars.

There is so much $$$ involved I think they would have to be forced to shut down.

Nah, they'll just let 'em coach this Saturday. Putting him up with the coordinators is punishment enough.

I actually think this is the reason for them to keep playing. This cult-like notion that JoePa can do no wrong and Penn St football cannot exist without him will only start to go away once the program moves on with a new regime. The quicker this happens, the better. Shutting down the program completely will only allow Paterno's shadow to linger.

Depends on how much control they want, they stop it and they can start it up again, someone else stops it and it starts up under another set of eyes overseeing. Smart move is to stop it themselves.

I could understand cancelling the rest of this season. I just don't think they should self impose the death penalty.

Ending the 2011 Season would be huge step in the right direction. Clean that place out ASAP. Bring in your new staff and start clean.

Agree, give athletes another year or two of eligibility, allow them to transfer. Give wins to scheduled game opponents.

Get ready for the law suits.

I can see the cancelling the rest of this season.

I can't see them not playing next year. Nore should that happen.

It would be much worse for them to actually play. After the de commitments, the transfers that will without question happen, the beat downs they take year in and year out, will do more damage to the program on the field than cancelling for 2 years.

How are you ever going to get that place clean, in any sense of the word? Paterno, and to a lesser degree Sandusky ARE Penn State football for the last half-century.

Tear down the locker room? Tear out the showers? Expunge Paterno, Sandusky and other names from the plaques, trophies and other memorbalia?

I can't even process the full scope of it right, much less any realistic way of cleaning up any of it (except the firings, which need to continue in every direction), much less all of it?
