When run to the short side is because it's the defenses weaker alignment, correct?

THIS guy explains it the best I have seen: LSU Speed Option to weak side

Yes. But the sideline acts like an extra defender so it really isn't an advantage.

Not really. Most teams don't run it to the side line with a slow RB.

shortside option with an unbalanced line.
staple of the gary crowton offense.

it forces the players upfield faster, which is good for lsu

not necessarily. Keiland's long TD vs Va. Tech was run to the short side of the field, but to the strength of the formation (and the strength of the defense).

There's a difference between short side and weak side.

i think it depends on how the defense defends it.... if they overload the strong side (see OT at Bama) becuase you have had success running it there, it sets up the short side option perfectly.
I think it really helped that Bamas D, while being huge and is great at getting upfield, may not have the best sideline-to-sideline speed that deep in to a game.

Not necessarily. Short side option just means you're running it toward the sideline on the same side of the field that you're on. So, if the ball's on the left hash, it's an option play to the left side of the formation.
Defensive alignments are keyed to the position of the tight end. In a one tight end set, the strong side of the formation is the side the tight end lines up on.
So, a short side option has nothing to do with the strength of the formation and could be off of either the strong or the weak side, depending on the offensive play call and which side of the line the tight end is sent to.

This is not exactly true. many defenses determine the "strong side" based on where the tight end lines up, but some determine strength based on the number of players on one side or the other of center. some defensive schemes assign strength arbitrarily based on a safety or linebacker call
