The LHN payoff was just that, a payoff. ESPN is basically taking a loss so that they could prevent a Big12 network from ever forming and college football in the entire western half of the US falling into the hands of Fox sports and not them. This was in reaction to the planned 16 team PAC expansion and as you have seen, it effectively killed it.

Even if Alabama takes the deal, a 14-team SEC will likely still have enough third-tier content to form an SEC Network... I even wonder if there is enough left over for a 4th tier of sports rights. I don't think ESPN will offer huge bucks again unless it prevents them from having to bid on a conference network, which in this case I don't think it will.

A&M could stand to gain more for their portion of revenue from an SEC Network than what Austin gets out of the LHN.
