When the SEC goes to 14 or 16

will there be more pride taken in the divisions as opposed to the conference as a whole? nowadays it's all about the SEC but with more teams will divisions start to form their own identities and attitudes. For example, if Miss State beats South Carolina in the future will they bust out an SEC West chant?

The SEC will split up in the next decade.

Sure it will, Chief.
Now that that's out of the way. To the OPs question, no more so than already goes on currently between the West/East.

It wasn't intended, but I did chuckle after I typed it.

It will break up because LSU will leave for the Big 12

Wow, your stupidity encompasses both academics AND athletics!? No, it can't be possible. You must be trolling...

Probably. When we stop playing each other, the simultaneous rivalry and comradery will wane. What identity will Georgia and LSU share? To each, the other will simply be a team they never play who has an association with other teams they never play who, as a group, share a tenuous and vague association with a group of teams they do play. There'll be no bragging rights ("Ha ha! We beat you 12 years ago!" isn't going to cut the mustard), no sense of conference identity ("Yeah, Boise? Well who cares if you beat Georgia? We'd kill them if we ever played them" would be about the only thing most SEC West fans would likely say).
Back in, say, 1976, when LSU and Georgia hadn't played each other in over two decades, do you think either felt any sense of pride or conference identity with the other? I doubt it. Conference identity depends on playing the teams in your conference at least every now and then.

It won't split up. The money ties will still be there. It just won't feel like a conference in any meaningful sense. There will be random non-conference teams that we will likely play as often or more often than we play some SEC teams. Fans of teams in one division won't feel any pride in the accomplishments of teams in the other division, nor will they suffer any embarrassment in their failures. "Oh, that's an SEC East (or West) team", they'll say, "it doesn't mean anything with regard to us".

other than with Florida, i don't feel a connection to the other East teams as it is with 12 teams.
there's sorta something there with Georgia, from 2003, 2005.
after that, there's that whole Kentucky miracle, game, the USCe Flynn Flip, umm, that's about it.
i don't think much will change IMO, with 14 or 16. we'll all still keep up with whatever is going on in the other division about like what we do now. there will be great games going on over there, we'll all recruit the same base players, etc.

They are just "there" as far as I'm concerned; I kind of feel the same way about MSU, and to some extent with USC (but that's been getting better). I love it whenever LSU plays UT, UGA, UF, UK, UM, UA, AU and Arky. I guess I'll feel pretty good about playing aTm when they get on the schedule. Not sure about Mizzou if they wind up here. Those connections we all either feel or don't feel for our SEC compatriots are just so subjective.

Lets just wait until the B1G puts a bigger offer on the table for Missouri and Kentucky than the SEC can provide.
It might get interesting if this ever happens.

No one in Kentucky wants to go to the B1G, not even the admin. There would be outrage and they would lose hundreds of millions in donations.

Depending on how things go the next twenty years I could see the day when a Bama or Florida or even a LSU say screw this and go independent, create their own network, and schedule whoever they hell they want especially if OU and Texas start reaching the title game a lot more than a SEC team will by making the conference tougher.

nicholastiger,
The SEC is working on an SEC network. When they do accomplish it, all members will assign their media rights over to it for a long period of time. It'll be hard to walk away. Not saying impossible, just very difficult and expensive.

Never say never.
The B1G can make an offer no other conference can ever make. Kentucky is very close to B1g campuses.
It's easily possible but other teams are head of KY.

quote:So, is it your contention that the SEC had no conference identity back when scheduling was left up to the schools, and certain schools just never played each other? Because that comprises a large chunk of SEC history. I think a lot of younger fans aren't even aware of that.

Personally, I think the TV people will eventually make it worth the SEC's while to play a 9 game schedule, and even with the permanent cross-over rival, that will allow you to play everyone in the league in a 3 year window. When you combine that with interaction in other sports, I think that would be regular enough contact to foster a sense of conference identity, not just division identity.

Never. Our identity is in basketball even if nobody else in the SEC cares and we're not going to walk away from 46 conference championships to be the new kid on the block somewhere else.
