So my dad will be buying a 24' bay boat soon and some guys from work are barking in his ear saying he shouldn't get one. Personally, I'm not worried about it getting in my way while casting because i have more of a sidearm cast. I think they look better and it would be really nice to have some shade during those hot arse summer days. For those of you that have them and those who don't, what are your pros and cons? TIA

ETA: for those who were hoping I was talking tank tops. Enoy.

Dude, when I got my boat,I went through this exact same thing.
I have a family who likes to fish so I knew I had to have some shade to get under.
I also like to do a bunch of fishing where there are low bridges that I have to go under.

T-tops allow you to still fish while they're up so I knew I needed one instead of a bimini.

Check out what I found.
I've had it on my boat for 4 years now.

Have to get under a bridge? Just pull 2 pins and unscrew two hand screws and the entire thing comes off.Only weighs about 20 LBS.

on a 24ft boat it could get in the wat if you are fishing with 8 people. Tell your dad to go to a place that installs them and get on a boat and see how much room it takes up.

If you will be doing a decent amount of close in rig fishing for mangroves, red snapper, cobia, etc... I think the t-top is the way to go. The t-top gives you additional rod storage and a good place to mount electronics.

On the other hand, if you will be fishing 3+ people for trout/redfish on a regular basis, a t-top gets in the way. It just depends on what you do most of the time.

Kayaks are for girls. Motors are for men!

Meaux, that looks awesome. I'll have to send him this way to read some of these responses. We will most likely be fishing for trout with several people on the boat, but I'm one less fisherman to worry about.

That's my only concern with t-tops (low bridges) and seems like yours covers it. I wouldn't worry about it when casting especially on a 24' boat.

You will cuss a permanent mount T-top when you come across that low bridge you are trying to get under.
It will happen when inshore fishing for Specs & Reds.

Hell,it could leave you stranded if you go under something on a low tide and try to get back high tide.

frick that noise.

There aren't too many low bridges around Dulac that I can recall. Not a big worry of mine.

If you'll be fishing a bunch of people then I wouldn't suggest one. My dad put one on his 21ft center console and we comfortably fish 3-4 people out of it with no problems. His stance; if more people want to go they can get their own damn boat. Plus they look badass. This one was built by a company out of New Iberia.

I would not own a 20'+ center console without one. Makes a great place for antennas and rod storage. Plus gives you a place to get out the sun. I have never had a problem with them getting in the way either as I mainly side arm cast anyway.
