Am I alone in feeling nervous when our best defensive play maker is returning punts? With the attention he's been getting, no doubt that some are gunning for him. I know he can make plays as a returner too, but can't decide if the risk/reward analysis washes out. Sorry if German. Thoughts?

I completely agree. I want to even take it a step further than what you propose. I don't want any starters to get hurt.

Therefore, I think we should play all the second string players and let the starters all sit. If we did this there is no chance they could get hurt on the field of play and would be super healthy and fresh for the MNC. What do you think?

If people like you had their way, we never would have seen Peterson return punts

If people like me had their way? Not so sure you can gleam my way or what I want from the OP. I am simply asking if the reward outweigh the risk. I was nervous for Patrick Peterson too. This isn't high school football, it's the SEC and it's a tough job for a returner. I think the punt returner is potentially exposed more than anyone on the field.

But perhaps I am wrong for simply asking the question. Maybe I should be thrown into a camp of soccer loving Prius driving pansies. Or perhaps I can ask a question I am thinking since this is, after all, a message board, and it is, after all, an analysis that coaches should and do consider at every level of the game.

And for the record, I think Priuses are ugly.

Thoughts?

1. No coaches think this way.

2. Where is the history of injuries on returns?

Mathieu has come out and said that he loves the contact and physicality of returning punts. If a guy has a passion for it, I think that nothing can stop him.

Also, if not Mathieu...it would probably be Randle or Sheppard. Can we afford to lose either one of them?

Or even Morris Claiborne...

Punt returns are for your players that have the best hands and judgement on the team. Huge turnover risk and can be a game changer with field position. Kick off returners are a much higher risk of injury. HB wants the ball in his hands and is obviously a play maker. No worries.

How many star players, that are also PR, have suffered serious injury over the last few years?

As I see it, you:

1) WORRY about TM7 returning punts

AND

2) WORRY that you may be the ONLY one WORRYING about it.

Dude, you need to stop WORRYING so much

No question. You don not want to get in the guy's head with "you might be hurt." Also, he is just excellent at messing with the other team about whether he is going to field it or not.

Besides, he don't care. He don't give a sh*t.

Nervous Nelly,

Not to dismiss the possibility of injury in this sport, but these are young, finely-tuned athletes. Most, if not all, thrive for the contact and physicality of the game, certainly TM does. To take away this apsect of his game would be taking away something that motivates him.

Personally, I think the TM you see now is operating at or near ideal and would not change one thing. I also hope he's immune to the hype and heisman talk. But he seems like a very grounded person, so that hopefully won't be an issue.

Let it go.

Agreed...he's HOPEFULLY not going to try to run the ball back with 3 guys coming from all directions at him 2 yards away. He'll fair catch it. Numerous people have stated he is a very smart player so this shouldn't be a huge worry. He seems to have good hands and hopefully will be able to prove something soon with some decent coverage.

I'm more worried with the honey badger returning punts more so because he doesn't seem to like the fair catch the ball at times he should. He's a little too fearless back there, but it hasn't cost us yet. Im not worried because of the injury risk. He could just as easily get hurt playing defense. I wish shep had the hands to return punts/kicks because him in open space is something special.
