Got the name in the late 50's. It's from a comic strip.

Goes back to the days of Paul Dietzel in the late 50s. It was the designation for the defensive unit. It came from a popular cartoon of the era. There was also the White Team, the starters; and the Go Team, the second unit.

Back then the LSU Fans would wear a Coolie hat to the games. It is why you hear the music you hear when the D does something good.

There was a comic strip called "Terry and the Pirates" 'way back before WWII. There were some characters on that strip called the Chinese Bandits who were supposed to be the meanest, baddest men on earth. Coach Dietzel named LSU's third string after the Chinese Bandits because of their tenacity. Nickname kinda fell to the wayside after playing both ways fell out of favor. Stovall resurrected the name for his defenses in the early 80s. Stuck ever since.

That is because it was Stovall, Scooter Pervis and Billy Cannon in those days. I sold Pepsi's in the stadium during the games. you could buy the Coolie hats from the Vendors who sold the Pennats.

The cartoon strip was Terry and the Pirates. An American guy named Terry Lee went to China looking for adventure and fortune. Along the way, he had to fight pirates, bandits, and various villains. Supposedly, Coach Deitzel was looking for a name for the defense, and came up with Chinese Bandits cuz it was the most bad-assed group he could think of.

actually when the defense stops the team on third down, or forth down if they are going for it

What happened was that they changed the substitution rules. In Dietzel's day, you couldn't do free substitution every down, or even after changes of possession, so players had to be able to go both ways. The Chinese Bandits were indeed third stringers--some of them walk ons--but they developed into a fierce, primarily defensive and special teams, unit. The little vaguely Chinese ditty the band plays started back then, and was the motif (theme song)for the Chinese Bandits on the television show that was a spinoff from the comic strip.

Ok, that is cool to give the details. I am amazed how many people are not familiar with the different tunes that are played and why

they were not "third" string - at worse second & might be first defense- such as mel branch- he played de for kc chiefs for several years. was the one guy the first offense did not want to go against-

The Chinese bought the naming rights.
