Squirrel hunting tips

I have squirrel hunted since I was a child but always in WV. We are looking/hoping to start here in LA. Currently we hunt public land and frequent Pomme de Terre, Spring Bayou, and other WMA's close Baton Rouge (within 2 hrs). Any suggestions on places to hunt, things to watch for, ... In WV it is as simple as finding a few nut trees (acorn, pig nut, hazel nut, walnut, ...) and waiting. Any and all info is welcomed. I am not asking for your best, secret location, just some information. Thanks!

Shoot em in the head or they don't count in bragging rights conversation.
Pretty much the same anywhere I have ever been.

Hunt the ridges in Pomme. That's where I will be Saturday morning.

I always find squirrels in the cypress trees along the eastern edge of Pomme closest to Belson. I know common sense would tell you to hunt the ridges, but I have killed equal numbers in the cypress trees. Only thing I can figure is they nest in the cypress so I catch them en route, not necessarily at the food source. Having said that, a pecan tree in Pomme de Terre is usually a lock for at least one bushy tail.

Is it illegal to shoot the nests?

If it is, that's news to me. I've blasted more than a few that I chased back to their nest before. Half the time the are wounded and crawl back there to die.

get in the woods before day break..find a nice oak/pecan grove and sit. you should have 3-4 killed right at day break. I never roam the woods really far. I find that sitting and waiting for them to come to you is the better method, given that you are in some nice hardwoods

I like to go after a good rain,it makes the walk in nice and quiet. (edit for spelling)
