***OFFICIAL*** ESPN 30 for 30 "Catching Hell" Tonight 7/C

With five outs remaining in Game 6 of the 2003 National League Championship Series, Florida Marlins second baseman Luis Castillo hit a foul ball straight for Chicago Cubs left fielder Moises Alou. But the crucial catch was not to be. Instead, a flurry of hands reached out from the stands, deflecting the ball into the crowd, and instantly one man’s name, like Bill Buckner’s before it, became synonymous with blowing it in a critical, high-stakes moment: Steve Bartman. In fact, dozens of errors contributed to the Cubs’ loss in 2003, and the Red Sox still had one more whole game to play in the 1986 World Series after Buckner’s legendary gaffe—yet these are moments that will live forever in the annals of sports infamy. Why?
With Catching Hell, Academy Award®-winning documentarian and Tribeca alum Alex Gibney probes this topic of sports curses and scapegoats with his signature incisiveness, tracing the roots of our compulsion to focus misplaced blame for an entire team’s legacy on small moments of tangible ineptitude. In the process, Gibney’s comprehensive interrogation of this under-examined sports phenomenon lends insight and a bit of heroic tragedy to Bartman’s own curse of undeserved notoriety.
I've been anxiously awaiting this one since I heard about the 30 for 30's coming out. This one speaks so much more than just a moment in sports history because it ruined someone's life who was the biggest cubs fan. If there ever was a moment when you use the phrase "Wrong place at the wrong time" this is it.

One foul ball fricked him up for life.

If anybody's life should have been ruined (which obviously nobody's should have), then it should have been the Cubs SS who booted the double play ball right after this that could have made the whole situation forgotten. The poor fan was doing what everybody else in the stands was doing by trying to catch that ball. You know he wanted the Cubs to win as much as anybody.

Yep. The score was 8-3 when that happened. One foul ball didn't cause a full scale meltdown. And it didn't make them lose Game 7.

Steve Bartman Story This is an extremely long read, but it's an awesome one.

I remember telling my friend in school no way the marlins win two in a row with Prior then Wood on the mound. Damnit to hell. I turned on mlb network before the season started this year and they had game 6 as one of the greatest games. Talk about painful to rewatch.

Couldn't happen to a better fan base or organization. I have never understood the love for the Cubs when they basically suck every year.

This was suppose to air last year but the director needed more time to talk with bartman I believe. He said he couldn't be happy with the film unless he got more time. I can't wait to see this. It seems like media wants you to love the cubs because they deserve to win but the older I get I don't care for them especially after probably watching tonight.

The booted double play ball cost them more than this play. It wasn't even guaranteed Alou was going to make the catch. I'm interested to see this though. I can't imagine being a fan of a team my whole life and then becoming one of the most infamous figures in that franchises history now.

If something like this happened to you as a LSU would you still pull for the team. Remember that people all day would walk up to you and threaten to kill you.

They have the Bartman Story on Outside the lines right now. Its crazy they just showed the foul ball, other people are reaching for the ball too.
quote:Yeah, its hard to imagine the situation of this happening to you. It would be tough to be hated by every other fan of that team though.

Is Bartman going to be interviewed for this? It would be a bummer if he doesn't speak about it

Yeah, seeing some of those assholes torment the guy that only did the same damn thing they would do.... frick the Cubs, hope they never win

I really believe the whole reason this "foul ball" has gotten so much attention over the years is bc of the way Alou reacted. If he wouldn't have gone crazy over a ball he might not have even caught, this wouldn't even be a discussion. thats jmo on the whole Bartman thing

Really looking forward to this.
