ESPN not only has a vested interest in covering sports, these days they have a vested interest in one school over the other. Thus their mouthpeices are running around spouting the company line.
ESPN has got to go. Everyone loves them when it's not your team getting trashed or ignored. If you're not USC, Texas, Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama maybe a few others, screw you. You don't make us enough money.

I'm pretty sure no one is forced to read ESPN or watch their coverage of sports. If you hate the commentary so much, mute the tv and listen to your local sports radio coverage.
They do have vested interest in particular schools and conferences, including the SEC. They will push hard for 4 super conference so they can completely lock out the smaller schools.
