until after FSU's committee is formed and meets. Here's some quotes from the PBP article that make a bit more sense now, with the ACC expansion and rumored additional teams.
Seems like they don't wanna be in a basketball conference, so if 15 and 16 are announced as more basketball schools - and it might already be too late, with 13 and 14 - I would expect FSU to start talking with the SEC, if they haven't already. Remember, there have been multiple sources saying that FSU was in talks with the SEC a month or two ago, and one even said it had been going on for over a year. I certainly wouldn't count them out just yet.

quote:
Andy Haggard, chairman of FSU’s board of trustees, told the Palm Beach Post Tuesday that the school is in the process of forming a committee that will explore FSU’s options as it pertains to future conference affiliation. Those options would apparently include remaining in the ACC or moving to the SEC if enough conference dominoes tumble.
“We are going to explore the conferences, what’s going on and make sure if anything does happen at Florida State that we are ready,”
“If you are going to four conferences of 16 teams we certainly want to be ready,” Haggard said. “If the ACC is included in that we want to be sure we are included and have a say so in regard to the teams that are coming into our conference.”

I don't see VT breaking off with UVA and the ACC. Plus, would we turn FSU down if they come to us?

TV markets and eyeballs...
the whole expansion isn't about better football its about $$$..you know that..
FSU doesn't add more eyes to SEC football...VTech, MO, TAMU, Virginia do....

Maybe not regionally, but nationally? Absolutely. Would a fan of a West Coast team tune in to watch a WVU game? Probably not. But FSU has national appeal, especially with how ESPN's been riding their "comeback".

i read that last bolded paragraph as the exact reason for this committee. they want a say so in the acc expansion, and you better believe the acc will do whatever possible to keep them happy.
fsu = the acc's texas
fsu = the acc's texas

agree with the WVU...FSU..meh...
Va Tech would add the DC market..same with UVA
MO adds St. Louis and KC
TAMU adds Houston, San Antonio and Dallas
FSU adds.....Tallahassee? Dothan? D/FWB?

Then why would they wait to form it until after two basketball school joined and half the expansion's already a done-deal?
Posted on 9/19/11 at 11:05 am to athletemed
fsu isn't going anywhere

FSU has had plenty of opportunities to join the SEC and has always turned them down.
They do not want to join a tough conference and never have. I see nothing that has changed.

they anounced way before any of this. its been a scheduled meeting for 2 weeks or something
you are the only person to say the word basketball

But why would they wait to meet until after most of the ACC expansion is done to have their first meeting? It doesn't make sense from that angle. If their goal is to discuss their position on potential new members, why schedule the first meeting to be after the new members have already been admitted?

Yes, I'm sure FSU found out about Pitt and Syracuse applying to the ACC when we did too. Oh wait.. they would have been consulted prior to the decision..
It's more likely FSU announced this after Pitt and Syracuse were in talks and it was all but official. Also, if the UConn rumors are true as well, it seems more basketball schools are on the horizon.
Whether their motivation is to leave what they view as a basketball conference or just get more leverage in the conference, we'll find out soon enough. But saying that they formed this conference to talk about expansion that's already occurred, well that's just silly.

VT does not give you the DC market no school does Maryland when good dominates the DC sports headlines after the redskins

I think you have this backwards. Fla St tried for years to get in the SEC (with Florida as their sponsor), and were always rejected.

And when we finally invite them, Bowden wimps out and pushes the move to the ACC.

Florida State turned the SEC down and went to the ACC when South Carolina and Arkansas were added.

its not what i said at all.
obviously, the school presidents have to give the conference commish the go ahead as far as expansion. when that was done, we dont know. maybe a few weeks ago, maybe a few months.
however, to say that FSU has created a committee now to explore leaving is a HUGE jump to conclusions.
re-read what i posted about FSU intentions earlier in the thread

this is from the author, not an FSU administrator.

this is a quote from the official.
the official clearly states they (fsu) want a say in ACC dealings, nowhere does he say a word about potentially leaving a conference.
to say otherwise is jumping to conclusions.
