I'm waiting on a return phone call from my wife's grandmother. She has lived in plaquemine all her life.
I asked her son who is in his fifties and he has no memory of the place which leads him to believe it's really old.

Sent pic to a friends father. His response is "yes I remember, they had great bread"

Anything specifically you want me to ask him?

Pirello's Bakery was a great bakery in Plaquemine LA. It was on Railroad Avenue across the street from the Courthouse. It was run my a lady named Annie Pirello who was a cousin of my Maw Maw ( grandmother)Elizabeth Tullier. We would visit Maw Maw and the trip always included a trip to Pirello's. They made wonderful French Bread and pastries. We would get these little loaves of French Bread about the size of a sub sandwich that they called "frogs" I don't know why they were called that but my brother and I loved them. We also would get "lady fingers" pastries and doughnuts. I think it closed in the late sixties.

I was born in 82, I vaguely remember it being open. I remember getting ham rolls, like a dinner roll with a chunk of ham in the middle. buttery and delicious!

not sure if it was still Pirello's then.

You must be talking about Dimms. I was told pirello's has been closed for 40 or so years.

Pirello's Bakery was owned by my grand parents,Andrew & Annie Pirello, and Charles, who is my father. My brother in Atlanta happened to see this message and called me about it. It's good to see it. If you are willing to part with it, I might be interested in buying it. I can bring it back home to Plaquemine. I'm looking up the papers on when the bakery was purchased and sold. Might have some photos. Would love to keep in the family.

CMott, do you know why the little loaves were called frogs? My brother and I, now in our mid 60's loved going to Pirello's. Some of the best french bread ever.

Cmott......wow the power of TD is right Kjungee, just like I have told many people if you ever need to know anything ask here and someone will have the answer.....the place I bought it from is not far from my house and they had another one...I will go back by there this week and see if they still have it, I think they are only open thurs-sat though so give me a few days....if they don't have the other one I would be willing to part with it to put it back in the Pirello's hands for sentimental purposes, I know what that would mean to me if I was in your shoes....email me at geaux_tigahs@yahoo.com
