Sounds like they actually want to prepare instead of just throwing together a meeting last second to try to block an A&M move.

Don't you get it? The SEC isn't going to do anything until aTm leaves the Big 12. This will keep them out of a legal battle.

Who gives a frick about the TX House hearing?

It's not like they have the final say in what aTm does.

I'm thinking that if A&M is proceeding with the move to the SEC that plenty of discussions with politicians will be happening with or without the meeting taking place.

Is it just me, or do you get the feeling these Texas people think they're way more important than they really are?

Exactly.

That hearing was nothing but a dog and pony show anyway...

Branch, the guy who runs the committee, said that since the SEC didn't offer, it doesn't look like A&M is going anywhere so he is stopping the meeting. If things rev back up, they will reschedule the meeting.

That's ALL Texas people in general. Trust me, I married one.

That said, the UT people are the worst.

The WORST!

Tell me how the TX House could block aTm from switching conferences.

Yeah, I visited there a few weeks ago. A lot of really cool people, but it was different. I hear Austin is full of them.

Well, that is where UT is located, so...

That said, I lived in Austin for 7 years - and would move back tomorrow if the right opportunity came along.

Nice. I visited friends in Houston, and while it was different, I thought it was a pretty cool town. We were in a nicer part though.

Legally, they can't.

They can threaten to withhold funding, but I just don't see a politician in their right mind (hah) would screw with the funding of a fairly large university in their state.

Juice no longer worth the squeeze for Branch. A&M leaving if they want and SEC accepts. Big political risk. Discussion w/Loftin enough.

It would be ridiculous for state lawmakers to frick with a school simply because it switched athletic conferences.

Especially if the deal worked out better for the school financially.

Christ, some people would lead us to believe that aTm is wanting to leave the Big 12 AND the State of Texas.

If Loftin pulls this off, he'll have a statue on campus, including the maroon and white bowtie.

STATEMENT OF CHAIRMAN DAN BRANCH REGARDING POSTPONEMENT OF HEARING TO DISCUSS COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE REALIGNMENTS “The August 16, 2011 hearing of the House Higher Education Committee on collegiate athletics has been postponed. “Yesterday, Dr. Bernie Machen, on behalf of the Southeastern Conference Presidents and Chancellors, stated that the member institutions have, at least for the time being, reaffirmed their satisfaction with the ?present 12 institutional alignment.? "While events may continue to evolve in the coming weeks, at this time, there is no immediate need to evaluate the merits of an athletic conference reconfiguration involving Texas A&M University and, potentially, other Texas public universities. If the current situation changes, our Committee is prepared to convene. “The hearing was scheduled to allow a broader public evaluation of the merits of pending athletic conference reconfigurations, to provide more transparency to our citizens and taxpayers, and to encourage an outcome that best serves the state of Texas. The Committee's intent was to be responsive to a pending reconfiguration involving major public institutions of higher learning with wide-ranging implications; not to micro-manage individual university decisions or to presuppose a certain outcome. "As many of us have worked long hours over the last several days, I appreciate the spirit of cooperation and many efforts of our university leaders and regents affected by the recent events, especially those by the leaders of Texas A&M University. Texas A&M is one of Texas's finest public universities. It is a Tier One national research university of the highest order, steeped in historic and innovative traditions, both in the classroom and on the athletic field. Whatever her bright future holds, we all want an outcome that is in her best interest, the best interest of our other outstanding universities, and the best interest of all Texans.”

It's not just postponed, it's cancelled altogether.
