Why are people so stuck on geographic location when it comes to expansion?

I've seen so many people talking about Auburn to the SEC East.

Why couldn't Texas A&M or Oklahoma play in the East? The words "East" and "West" are just words, yo.

Auburn is more eastern than Vandy FWIW.

The Atlanta Braves played in the NL West for years.

Do you really want to fly your swim team 1200 miles for a Tuesday evening meet?

Do you really want to make your fan base drive that far or buy a plane ticket for a road football game?

It's a little different for pro sports teams.

I don't know many people planning on driving to College Station for a game. Everybody in the SEC would have to fly to College Station.

Who wants to fly them 1000 miles on a Tuesday evening? What's another 200 extra miles?

Nashville is closer to College Station in mileage compared to Auburn.

Auburn is only 170 miles closer to College Station than Athens or Gainesville.

Because its named after a geographical region?

Auburn should be in the East and Vandy in the west then.

So you're saying we should just try and add anyone regardless of geographical region because Vandy is slightly more West than AU is?

No...I just saw a lot of threads about moving Auburn to the East if a team west of Auburn were added to the SEC.

The only way that happens is if the SEC decides to add a 14th team that is located in the East. Why? because geography matters.

No...because having an even set of teams for each division matters.

part of the appeal for Texas A&M is natural rivalries with LSU and Arkansas. Generally I don't get the obsession with geographic correctness, such as Colorado and Utah in the Pacific 10. Your suggestion makes no sense at all however. Yes the Braves were in the NL West, but they were pretty isolated, the 2 closest cities in the NL to Atl (back then) were Cincinnati and Houston, who where both also in the West. Have A&M in the East would be like having Montreal in the NL West or the Dodgers in the East.

I'm sure that was done to keep AU and Bama in the same division and Vandy and UT in the same division. That AU is a few degrees further East is not important.
