re: When will someone put the smackdown on the NCAA?

I've been predicting for a while that several conferences, starting with the BCS automatic qualifiers, will give the NCAA an ultimatum: Stop acting like Nazis (to borrow Dale Brown's description of them) or we will pull out of the NCAA and form our own athletic association.
If 10 of the most "athletic" conferences, including the six BCS conferences, would do that, the NCAA will stop with this bullying, nit picky, inconsistent compliance crap!
LSU has already been punished more for a football player who never played a down for LSU and for a coach who was shown the door for his part in the same incident than Auburn has for playing a player who admitted that his father shopped him around to the highest bidder.
Effin' ridiculous in its inconsistency!!!
Mark Emmert would not want to be the Gorbachev of the NCAA when it dissolves.

SA should stay in SA dorms. That stupid change has always missed me off.

I agree. The NCAA is dysfunctional—unpredictable and therefore illegitimate. Compare the unapologetic, unsanctioned Auburn/Cam Newton affair and the self-sanctioned LSU with the NCAA tacking on a one-year probation to pretend it is legitimate.
LSU and others (especially those outside of Florida and Alabama) should start talking about forming their own association.
Further into the future, discussion should start about college-associated football teams becoming pre-professional with contracts instead of commitments and without the self-contradiction of Title IX. Rules would need to be hashed out such as the team must be made up of mostly players from the state where the college is located and the player must attend the college. If the colleges balk, start private colleges with vouchers.

Since they are the governing body of college athletics I'm going to go ahead and say never.
The thing is the Universities can fix this tomorrow by basically shutting down the NCAA. The NCAA is the organization that governs college athletics, but it is funded by the Universities themselves. What has happened thru the years is that the NCAA believes that the schools work for them, when it is actually the other way around. What needs to happen is a group of schools need to come together and say enough is enough. Drop out of the NCAA, and it would only take a few power schools from power conferences and the whole thing would come down like a house of cards. Do this then start over from ground zero.
