Quick rundown of my current situation. I bought a used boat about 3 months ago, boat has a 1998 mercury 175 w/EFI. The person I bought the boat just recently had a new power head put on the motor and had it serviced at the same time by a reputable mechanic. The first time I took the boat out I had power issues, the boat bogged down, would not get on plane and would not go faster than approximately 5mph even at full throttle. Took the boat back to the mechanic, and he said it was something to do with the fuel pump and fixed it at no cost. Took the boat out on memorial day and it ran like a top, so I assumed the problem was in deed fixed. however over the weekend I found myself right back where i started with this boat.

The issue I am having is, when I throttle down, the motor the bogs, the RPM's go to the 3500-4000 range, and the boat does not get above 5 mph or so. But after a while (10-15 min or so) of riding with the throttle wide open the boat slowly begins to pick up speed and gets on plane. but if I stop or even slow down, I am back to square one. Does anyone know what may be causing this? I am pretty good at fixing things myself but only if I know what I need to fix. If worst comes to worst I will take it to another mechanic, so if no one knows what could be causing this maybe someone could reccomend a good mechanic around Prairieville.

sounds like a jet problem to me, but I dont know to much. Maybe trash in the fuel tank that got mixed around the weekend it ran good.

Good mechanic = Casey Owens in Sorrento. I can't ever remember the name of the shop but it's on Roddy Road.

ETA: Simon's Outboards

Sounds like fuel.

Spray the jets, hook up to fresh gas in a seperate 6 gal tank..............

Simon's has about 400 boats over there right now so it'd be a while before they even got to you.

I know 2 guys in the prairieville area that do outboard work out of their garages, one used to work at ascension marine and the other went to outboard school...he just recently fixed a problem with my injectors on my 225 EFI. If u want their names and numbers email me...

ETA: and they are both very good

Definitely sounds like a fuel problem. Probably the injectors.

If it isn't the fuel pump or EFI, it'll be something slowing the fuel flow down at lower revs. A few things you can check before waiting for a mechanic to look at the EFI. First, take off the vent hose at the fuel tank. Try to blow air through it - it should allow air to pass freely. If not, you may have trash, mud, or wasp nest in the hose which can cause the behavior you described.

Next, replace gas filter and water separator -- again, not a "sure thing" but definitely a positive culprit.

Both of those items are very indicative of a motor running well at top end, but fuel starved at low end.

You may also want to put in some gas booster, just in case you have old gas or water in your tank (I would doubt this is the case, since it ran good then started running crappy again).

Of course, if all else fails - it very well could be gummed up deposits in the EFI jets (very common for EFI motors that have sit up a few months).
