he was pretty much a can't miss who turned out to be average in a crowded USC backfield.
How wasn't he a miss when he missed?
USC's backfield being "crowded" had no bearing on how he turned out. The kid was their #1 RB for 2 and a half years and he was given every possible chance to shine. He just more or less flickered.
Don't get me wrong, he was alright. At times, he showed flashes, but overall.....the kid was no where NEAR the 5*, #2 prospect in the country, RB that everyone expected him to be.
I think a lower Rivals250 would have sufficed and his performance in college would have warranted it.
Hence, he wasn't a "can't miss."

In retrospect, yes he missed. We could use hindsight to say this about anyone.
If we are talking about at the time of his recruitment, when he spurned LSU, he was considered a can't miss. Maybe not by you or me, but by the "experts". I took the OG question to mean what recruits were CONSIDERED to be can't miss and spurned LSU. McKnight definitely falls in that category.
While you or I may not have been overly impressed with the flashes of stardom, the "experts" were and dubbed him the next Reggie Bush.
