How do you know when it's time to transplant the plants from whatever planter you germinate them in to the ground?

When they outgrow the container.

Just picking. People who plant seed usually do so to get a head start so they time it to go in the ground when weather permits.

I'm germinating flowers from seeds just because it's fun to watch them grow up from little seeds.

Reminds me of a project we did in school in elem. Kept our milk cartons and planted a marigold seed in it and watched it grow.

They're supposed to be good companions of tomato plants. Keep certain insects away.

Germinate in peat/jiffy pots and just plant the whole thing in ground or larger pot. If it's just for fun these are easy and cheap.

That is very good advice, HOWEVER, I have a feeling she may come back and ask what a peat pot is so be on standby.

problem with transplanting this time of year is the heat. It's tough to move just about anything with the heat like it is. Just make sure you set up to be wetered at least a couple times a day so they don't burn up.

I water at like 6 am and 9 pm everyday. my garden is looking great so far, and I've only planted things about a month ago.

eta: I'm only planning on planting flowers from this point on - no more veggies.

Yup, I just lost my only 2 cucumber plants. I just put them in a permanent container and it only took 2 days for them to die. My jalapeno plants are hit/miss. One day they look wonderful and the next they look like they are about to die. This heat is horrible.

From left, I have dragon tongue green beans, zephyr squash, bonnie bell peppers, banana peppers, tomatoes and in the front I have a cucumber plant that might not make it.

all looks good. Use a trellis for the squash and cucumber.

Save the dried flower heads from the marigolds and reuse the seeds next year. You'll never have to buy marigold seeds again.

Saved some pumpkin seeds from last year's Jack-o-lantern. Started them on the window seal and moved them into the garden last week. They are quickly taking over the whole front row.

As starte before marigolds do keep bugs off your veggies. This is becasue they contain pyrethrins.

You will need a bunch more space for the cucumber and squash. The squash alone will grow big enough to overtake the entire garden area.

You have a good looking garden though and have choosen some good plants.

If you begin to develop black spots or white fuzzy stuff on your plants you need to stop watering at night or make sure when you do you only water the ground not the leaves. The water sitting on the leaves overnight (which does not evapoorate like it would in the daytime) can cause fugus/mold growth.
