Thats right, they are so damn thick and you do not have to go too far out. We load the boat with women and children and get our two apiece...........
Caught a 20 lb-er in 60' of water a few weeks ago!!!

I'm hoping we can get out this weekend so I can shoot one more AJ before the season closes.
Serious Question: Anyone know the difference between a Greater Amberjack and a Lesser Amberjack? The lesser is still open when snapper season starts....

Lessors a little smaller and a different color.
I'm not sure I could tell the difference though..

The Lesser is typically caught in much deeper water. It has more pinkish colors and has a diff amount of Gill Rakers, not sure if more or less, but different..........

Can you tell the difference?

and for the record, they are WAY better tasting than the Greater AJ..........

I dont think I've ever seen/caught one but thats usually the case with fish; the smaller the better tasting. Except for Tuna

Other fish commonly caught and hard to to tell the diff between is the Mangrove (Black) Snapper and juvenile Cubera Snapper..........
Posted on 5/26/11 at 9:48 am to TreeDawg
Yeah, thats dam near impossible
I really dont think USCG/LDWF can tell the difference either though

We caught a Mangrove that went 13 lbs a couple years a go at a Rodeo and they were all over that beast trying to make sure it was a Mangrove. One of them has an Arrow shaped patch on the roof of its mouth.
I swear, some Mangroves we catch come aboard Snapping and Gashing their teeth like a bad MoFo pissed at the world........
