THE FIGHTER.
How many have there been? How many have been realistically portrayed? Beyond "Rocky", what does the Genre offer?

I liked The Fighter a lot.
Gladiator is a good boxing movie.
I didn't like any of the Rocky movies

The Basic Formula is, throughout Representation: Redemption, with Lover, with Child, with Self, through Badly-Developed Ring Scenes.
Same old Shots , in The Fighter, as in Raging Bull, as in Rocky, as in Fat City.
Loserism is glorified . . .

If you didn't think The Fighter was a good movie then I just can't do anything for you.

The only thing I don't like about boxing movies (being a big boxing fan) is the over the top portrayal of the in-ring scenes. Ali was actually the best as far as realistic boxing scenes go. I've heard nothing but good things about the fighter overall but I don't know what the actual boxing scenes were like.

The Fighter was a very good movie and deserves to be mentioned with the other greats like Raging Bull, Million Dollar Baby, Cinderella Man and others. Every boxing movie can't have the great ring choreogrophy of Ali, but there are other apsects of the films that makes them great. Also there are somewhat limitations with some of the actor's athletic ability that makes the fighting scenes less realistic but no way a boxing film should be judged on that alone.

I liked the fighter a lot, but the boxing in the film was rather lame and looked to choreographed and fake.

The Boxer has arguably Daniel Day-Lewis' and Emily Watson's best performances. As far as realistic ring scenes it's ok, but that is not the point of The Boxer, The Fighter, or of Rocky. It's about the journey, what drives the charcters, and great acting.
I guess it's all about what you expect from a movie going into it
I don't agree with the ranking, but this is a pretty good list of boxing movies:

Hate boxing movies. Not a big boxing fan, but have nothing against it. Don't know why I hate the movies so much.
About the same as horseracing movies to me.

Play it to the Bone.
I can remember watching the first(I think) Ward/Gatti fight and that movie had just come out. I think Ward and Gatti went down 8 or so times that night and I remember Lampley saying, "You've seen Play it to the bone in theaters. Now you are watching it for real."

Fighter was not a bs boxing movie...it was good acting, decent story. Rocky, now that is bs, but entertaining.

Try Fat City with Jeff Bridges.
