I'll have to dust off my Book of Profundity, so I can have some insight into what I'm missing.

It's a movie with 70's pacing I can guarantee you that. Don't worry so much about what it's "about" either

No idea what it's about or the plot, but that clip doesn't make me want to see it in the least bit.

Something deep down tells me this is going to be Malick's masterpiece but I don't want to have my hopes too high. That clip was great.

Its Malick, so its probably about:

Nothing.

Long beautiful shot of nature.

Nothing.

I wouldn't say it's about "nothing" but it won't have a straightforward plot. I really do love Malick's films and how he combines incredible imagery with abstract philosophical narration. It's mesmerizing IMHO.

Oh my god. That clip was art on film.

I know it was a small part of a bigger scene and bigger theme. I'm not worried about the entire product. I'm still going to see it. Only a few weeks left!

not gonna watch the clip. don't want to reveal its contents to myself.

as far as Malick's about-ness, basically all of his movies come down to:
characters placed in an idyllic setting, a chance to start over again you could say. the characters (and by extension the audience) glorify nature and scratch the surface on the immensity of life in the universe. then inevitably society/human conflicts disrupt their dream.

eta: I saw The New World for the first time about a month ago. gametes everywhere. underwear ruined.

Yea although A New World is his weakest movie it's really underrated. Of course, it's no Days of Heaven which is a cinematic masterpiece

I thought that clip was beautifully shot and i don't care if i don't understand it yet.

The film as a whole looks like it will be great

My least favorite was Badlands. Not to say it wasn't a good movie, but he clearly hadn't found his artistic voice yet. I thought The New World was top 10-20 material for the 00s after seeing it.

I think The New World is his best. His vision seems more fully realized; the cinematography, the music, the acting, and the voiceovers all inseperable pieces of a whole. Followed by Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, which in spite of their mastery lack the effortless marriage of theme and style in TNW.

I think in Lubezki, his DP from TNW, he found a kindred spirit. You are now seeing the look Malick is finally satisfied with. Tree of Life marks the first time Malick has reused a DP. History will look back on The New World and see the film where he became most self-assured in approach, and it already seems to be rising in stature amongst Malick-ites and critics.

I love the New World. I recently bought it, that is because I've already seen it 3 times and plan on many more.

And Leauxgen nailed Malicks approach to film on the head.

Is this gonna be based on that kid's book about that tree and the boy who kept taking parts of the tree (the tree offered its parts bc they were friends)for his own use until nothing was left but a stump?
