Not this year's team (that's obvious they are done), but the program itself.
A pitiful close to the regular conference season last year and continuing bad SEC perfrormance this season.
Not many quality position players or hitters.

I think we will be fine youth hit us hard this year

McCune could be huge in the next few years
Gausman could be huge as well
Rhymes could be a great player in the next few years
Jones could be another great player
i'm sure some others will step up
Katz will be big next year
Ross will be big in the next few years
I'm sure we will continue to get good recruiting classes.
I think we will be fine, last year was a fluke if AR wasn't hurt we would have had alot better year.
this year is youth killing us.
we will be fine IMO

As much as I would like to agree with you, I just don't buy the youth excuse this deep into the season with so many at bats and literally no improvement in either defensive play or hitting. We have 5 guaranteed outs in our liineup, and there isn't much you're going to do with that.

That's certainly a lot of could there. These players certainly aren't going to get much development from this current crop of coaches.

I know its not an excuse but I think this team will turn around we just need to pull in more good recruiting classes.

the assistants need to change CPM should stay, he took this team from the dumps and made it a great team in just 2 years. He is a great coach IMO, just needs to change up the assistants.

In terms of talent, the foundation is in place if Mainieri can just recruit some power hitters for the corner positions, which really shouldn't be too hard. Most of the time you can just fill up those spots with JuCo transfers and do fine.

In terms of coaching, there is a lot of concern about Grewe and Sanchez being in over their heads.

I'm not sure how practice is being run, or how game discipline is being enforced, but there has been a lot of troubling complacency in the style of play this year.

Getting your arse kicked I can tolerate, but it begins to turn into a problem when pitchers refuse to be careful and hitters keep hitting long fly ball outs rather than scrapping for higher OBPs.

We'll see.

No, we have a great recruiting class coming in. Do we have to ask this question after every loss?

Even sloppy play I can handle from new players, but the nonchalant doing stupid/lazy-crap-because-you-think-you're-hot-stuff is what absolutely kills the success of talented programs.

I just asked it after this loss. In case it slipped your razor sharp mind, the team has lost all but one SEC series this year after losing 4 of the last 5 SEC series last season. Do you see a trend?

So we need a big class to right ourselves? This is PM's 5 year, he should be reloading not rebuilding!

PM needs to change his assistants. He cant stay loyal to his good buddies and watch the program sink any farther.

What I am concerned about are BASIC plays that LSU is not making. In the Vandy game today, there are runners on first and third with one out. The batter hits the ball sharply right back to the pitcher, Tyler Jones. Instead of trying to turn a double play, Jones holds the runner at third and throws to first. Vandy then scores three runs with two outs when LSU should be out of the inning. This strikes me as the kind of play a decent high school pitcher would know how to handle.

It seems like these kind of plays are happening regularly. Couple that with poor at bats--particularly with runners on base--and it looks like LSU is lost. I know that there are a lot of young players on the team, but there are freshmen and sophomores who are playing well for other teams.

Is this a coaching problem or a playes problem, or both?

Guys..maybe I am crazy for allowing my joy and happiness be determined by the actions of 18-21 year old players. This year for LSU has basically sucked big time. Basketball sucked and this baseball team is not getting the job done at all. I think my priorities are headed in the wrong direction. I love LSU even though the University did not offer my major. I went out of state. But man...it just crushes me to see the men's sports just struggle into total embarrassment with Trent and Paul.

What hope can anyone give about the future of these programs and coaching staffs for the next 2 to 4 years. It is depressing. Maybe..I need a girlfriend to get my mind off of how bad these past two years have been. Just ranting...that is all. I am angry as shite that we suck so bad.

Will it ever change ?

Much like Les Miles, I think Paul Mainieri experienced a lot of early success, and then kind of let some big holes in his recruiting classes sneak up on him.

He wasn't used to recruiting at such a high-profile place like LSU and having so many recruits never show up because they signed pro.

So he had to fill this gigantic imbalance in the lack of pitching (see e.g., the 2010 season), and went all-out in the last recruiting class trying to find pitching and catching. But then the imbalanced shifted over to hitting, where the program also had a huge hole, and that's what he's going to have to continue to recruit up until classes start next fall.

It's pretty obvious we aren't playing to our standards but it's not time to call a state of emergency just yet. Coach Mainieri is a good coach; he'll make the changes needed to make a good team.
