Our philosophy at RB

My memory and knowledge of LSU football history may be completely off, but the last time we had a single featured back ala Knowshon Moreno and Mark Ingram was back in the days of Kevin Faulk. We seem to always have this stable of talented RB’s with enormous potential, but nobody ever seems to really flourish as a premiere back, although Scott did gain over 1,000 2 years ago. I mean it’s crazy thinking about the talent we have at RB with Ware, Ford, Blue, and now Hilliard, but none of them will probably end up being that featured back. And you know those guys are fully aware of the situation when they come in, because we’ve done it for years, which amazes me even more that we get this talent.
Do you think we would benefit from going to a featured back set up, with a specialists back and some solid backups, or does this just work for us? I love the depth, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes I think it’s similar to the disadvantage of running a 2 QB platoon. Nobody really gets a chance to get settled into the game. Obviously the QB scenario is more vital, but I would love for us to go “Ware is our guy”………..or any of the other outstanding backs we have. I just feel it would establish our running game even more and make it more solid. Obviously just my opinion.
Or is this a byproduct of over recruiting?

I hear ya but if you think about it Ridley, Scott, and Hester were the "main" backs the last few seasons...they almost always, unless they were injured, had at least twice as many carries as the other backs

2010
Stevan Ridley
249 attempts
1,147 yds
15 TD - according to ESPN
Seems he was our feature back last year.
However, I like the platoon - Remember 2009 when KW and CS got hurt. It's good to have a guy with some carries under their belt coming off the bench in that situation.

they dont even have featured backs in the pros , it serves a purpose , so your running back doesnt get injured as much and you can make mor recruits happy,, although i would say hester was a feature back, ridley, scott, and addai

Yeah, that's true.
I mean, if it works, it works. I remember reading a thread on the SEC Rant about someone's top 25 players in the conference, and the only reason Ware wasn't on that list is because he just wasn't going to get the carries. Made me wonder.

But for like 1 year (again, my memory is a little shaky on this stuff). Like I said, I'm totally fine with it and agree it helps with keeping our guys healthy, but I just feel we aren't going to see another Faulk type of career anytime soon.

probably ever. Faulk ran for 1000 yds 4 yrs in a row.
but as far as a guy being the feature back multiple yrs, I think Ware has a strong shot to do that for the next 2 barring injury.

Ware shouldn't be on a top 25 list (yet) just bc he had a decent bowl game.

Well no, I don't think so either. But we pretty much all feel he has that potential, and the fact that he probably won't get the carries to be all conference or all-american......not disheartening, but I guess unfortunate.
How much PT did Ware really get last year? I felt it was mainly Ridley, Blue, and Ford for the most part.

This. But nothing wrong with bring loaded a rb . We have rb's running out our ears, but that is a good thing. I think Les will play the back he thinks is best & the others when necessary.

well it sounds like he's the 1st team TB, we've had 1000 yd rushers/ all conf types 3 of the last 4 yrs, and he's got the whole pass catching dimension that'll help him stand out, so I think he's set up to get recognition.

it was mainly Ridley. like heavy Ridley. with a little of the others sprinkled in at different times (Blue til he got hurt, Ford late, and Ware as an all purpose type until the bowl).

Faulk split time with Cecil until he left and then he split time with Rondell Mealey. (Although he needed to because Faulk did KR/PR.) Then Mealey was the lone back for us in 99, D. Davis was the guy in 2000, Toefield and Davis split time with Toefield carrying the load until he was hurt then left, then Davis took over. After that, Addai was the go to back, Vincent & Broussard, Hester, Charles Scott, Ridley and now...

not to pick nits, but Toe led the team in rushing in 00 as a freshman. Davis was more of the feature guy in 02 with Toe coming off the knee injury in the 01 SECCG, and then Toe getting hurt again in 02.

LOL. Educate me............PLEASE

We usually do have a "feature" back. He is just usually a big bruiser who will get the tough yards (Scott, Ridley, Hester) not a flashy highlight-reel type (devine, moreno).
Even Darren McFadden split time with Felix Jones.

I love the multiple back system! The reason that LSU tends to use it more in the past years is because the last 2 coaches have liked bigger backs. These guys that are carrying between 225 and 235 cant carry the ball 25-40 times a game and be fresh at the end of a game and at the end of a season. Yeah Steven was a freak last year with his carry total but he is more the exception than the norm. The coaching staff likes to run multiple backs to prevent burnout at the end of games and end of the season. These are the times when your #1 back is the most important and you want him fresh. Also, the multiple backs give a ton of in game reps to underclassmen which helps in future seasons. Also the bowl game was a great example of multiple back schemes working because Ridley was not working we went to Ware and he preformed well. This never would have happened if that was his first carries of the year. The only draw back is that it hurts draft stock. So that means we wont get the super profile backs out of high school because we never really have first round running backs like USC. I think that Les knows what he is doing with this one and I like there philosophy on the running game
