Directions to Parrains or La Lagniappe or Acme.

Went yesterday(not my call..was nearby with others). I'd suggest the Ahi Tuna, Eggplant Supreme(Squeaky and Stabiler joints fry eggplant well and in good portion), etc..

But, even in BR, there are better fish dishes(Lagniappe by a mile), poboys(very few shrimp, lil tomato slice, but on Nawlins bread..George's, Rocco's, Brewbacher's Drusilla, etc..better) onion rings(good, but Acme and Anderson's are much better), plates and side items(Parrains kills 'em).

City Cafe doesn't exceed anyone in town at almost any dish they serve..not one.

Eh, not my choice unfortunately. My sister wants to catch up so it is her call.

I have been to Lagniappe and Parrain's, so I am not going to bitch just for the experience.

Gotcha.

If it's on someone else dime, or if you live within a few thousand feet of one, then fine for a quick fix and feeling lazy..

Otherwise, I'd drive clear across town to Parrains or Lagniappe or Acme, for similar dishes in similar price ranges.

They're OK. Montalbanos on the O'Neal/Flannery side of town, and Heads and Tails on the Perkins side of town, are better, over say either City Cafe location crawfish.

Charbroiled Oysters there are light years better than Parrains. One of the best places to get it in BR.

DO NOT get the steak there though its just not good there.. Boiled shrimp there is normally good. Fish dishes are decent.

They have decent salads and pasta. Seafood is ok but nothing great.

Not even close.

Parrain's, maybe.

Lagniappe is way more expensive.

Id say even Parrains is a good bit higher for many things.. When I lived in the area City Cafe was a great spot to hit on a Friday night. It was always crowded but not to the point where you had to wait 30 min to sit.

LL is good but unless you get there at 5pm you will wait upwards of an hour and pay a lot more.

When factoring in portions, side salad, and quality of side items, how can either of you say that the extra buck or two(or five per entree..if need be) spent at Parrains, is actually more expensive than City Cafe? You get what you pay for in quality and portion. Now I'll agree..Lagniappe is notably more expensive and another tier of dining.

City Cafe lunch and dinner portions are similar(and smallish)..a place like Parrains is best hit for lunch or daily specials.

I don't eat cajun or La fare daily, maybe bi-weekly, thus when I want it, I want it where it is done better or best in BR..

Le Creole has been impressing me of late(try the crab cake for $16 off menu)..and doesn't have LL's obscene wait time.

i concur...i went there a few weeks ago, after not having gone there in over a year, and got the shrimp grits. they were tasteless..it's too bad, because they offer some things on their menu that you can't get at george's or dempsey's.

They have all u can eat crawfish on tuesday nite. It's legit. I live walking distance from the place. Brunch is good. Never tried the shrimp n grits but don't understand why that dude is complaining bout portions, I think they are quite big. The girfriend never finishes anything, I rarely make a happy plate. And for the guy who asks if anyone eats there, I got my food Togo twice last week b/c they were on a wait. To be open minded I've only had one waiter each time I go so maybe I've got comfotable in the bar area. overall I think it's one of BRs underdog restaurants.

With George's 300 yards up Coursey from City Cafe, why would anyone want CC's eight or nine shrimp poboy for $9, instead of George's $7.50(might be more now?) 'twentyish' shrimp poboy that requires eating some with a fork to close(common to Nawlins but not in BR!)? I agree with you on AYCE crawfish or catfish Mon-Tues-Wed nights at say CC, Drusilla, Anderson's, Cafe Americain, etc..

I went Saturday with mostly fit people, and a few children, maybe two bellies in the bunch(moi included), everyone's plates were empty(no need for to-go boxes)..granted nobody ordered apps. Normally I tend to split an onion ring or seafood stuffed mushroom, when at CC, they do these two pretty well.

I'm not hating on the place, but it like a Walk-On's, just lacks wow dishes or factor..

Meanwhile, on Fridays, Parrain's Tabasco and Mustard Catfish with potato salad, string beans, peanut cole slaw or pepper jelly side salad..makes my stomach smile.

More like $10.95 (+$2 for FF) at George's but definitely better looking than what you had as far as the shrimp count.

City Cafe is solidly decent for a neighborhood restaurant. Agree that there is no wow factor but never had a bad meal or left hungry.

You're up late tonight!

The CC fries were ala carte too, at $1.50..and they were soggy bland.

I had some homework, so our catching up was post-poned. I am thinking Chelsea's or Coyote Blues.

Yeah, my mind wants Chelsea's, but my heart can't pass up good chips and queso.

Yes, that might be the fattest line in FB history, but I am skinny as a rail so no worries.
