Background: When I retired in 2000 I planned to fish Toledo, Sam Rayburn, etc. full time. I had a Skeeter bass boat, 150 Merc, etc. Between 1996 and 2005 I bought over 30 rods & reels, 30 large tackle boxes with 50 - 100 baits in each (Rat-L-Traps, deep divers, topwaters, jigs, plastics, you name it, etc.). My cost 2000 to 2005 was easily over $7,000. I had competitively bass fished since the '70s, so I knew my stuff (which combination of baits provided a "full assortment").

My cancer surgery before 2000 changed all my plans. I could not bring myself to get out on a lake. I thought I could, but I couldn't. Sold my bass boat in 2007. Been slow to deal with the rods & reels and the tackle boxes full of baits.

I don't need the money, but I don't want to necessarily give all my brand new (so to speak) unused fishing stuff away. This stuff is still "top drawer" fishing tackle today and somebody can use any or all of it a lot better than I can. I know the Outdoor Board can help. I've tracked this board for 2 months and also searched, but I see no related info. What's some of my best options? TIA...

BTW, this is my first original post. Please go easy.... Yea, right

ETA: Thanks for your support. This means a lot to me. In addition, thanks very much to all posters for the wonderful ideas you have provided. Everyone has been very helpful!!!!

Sorry to here about your situation.

My recommendation would be to donate it to a local fishing organization that would get it into the hands of kids and young fishermen. There are numerous organizations seeking to get young guys out on the lake and teach them about the joy that nature can provide.

I'm sure you could write it off on your taxes as a charitable organization.

But if you're looking to sell, I know a few guys that are starting to fish tournaments and I'm sure they would appreciate the opportunity to purchase some of your gear and put it to use. Bass fishing has gotten so expensive these days...

TT, I reread your post about 3 times, but, if I missed something, I apologize.... When you had your boat, surely there were always a couple of guys that fished with you? Let it be their turn for you to fish with them now.. Before you give away, or sell your stuff, get your butt back on the lake, in THEIR boat, if you can.

EBay will probably be your best bet, I would sell the reels by themselves and the rods by themselves. Chances are unless you bought high end reels you won't get much money for 6-10 year old reels. Good rods will hold there value and its harder for people to tell age if they are in unused almost new condition. Then for the baits you can either sell the whole tackle box or seperate the baits by groups and sell them in small lots (this will be your way to make the most money). Since you are retired this may be a way to take up alot of your time.

Now I see it says you live in Houston, I am in Katy man I could actually use a few rods to replace some older beat up stuff of mine let me know. Heck I wouldn't mind just seeing a collection that big.

I am headed up to Sam Rayburn on Wednesday, your retirement plan sounds alot like what I would like to do.

Unless there is some physical issue you are not letting us know about don't stop living your dream because of some punk arse cancer, get your arse out there and live it up.

Prayers sent to you bro.

What lures and reels you selling? I'll probably help you thin out your collection. Seriously, I could use some good stuff. But like said before, don't dare sell or get rid of all your gear!

I'd go ebay or craigslist.

The rods and reels you can sell individually and the lures you could sell in lots. Fill a tackle box up and sell it, or put all your plastics in one lot, all your crankbaits in another, spinnerbaits in another, etc.

Pawn shops would probably buy the rods and reels and maybe the baits, but you won't get much for them.

If you're looking to get rid of it all quickly, I'd pull it all out, put it on your driveway, take a big picture, and list it on craigslist and sell it all as one big lot.

Please do this Taser, and I'll make an offer.

How much are you looking to get for the lot? I'm trying to get my two boys more into fishing, not to mention how much I enjoy it. I'm really sorry to hear your situation.

Like previously mentioned donate them to the Houston BASS club or something similar, let them auction them at their banquet would be a tax right off for you and a great opp for BASS and some anglers to put your good stuff to use.

With the rise of bass fishing teams at local colleges, this may be a great outlet.

There are also some programs at high schools.

I would think your knowledge would be invaluable also and a great way for you to stay connected to the outdoors even if you are not physically capable. There are programs that help those with speech loss communicate and working with a Speech therapist, rehab program, or even a medical school would likely help. I know they usually have the resources to help you communicate and do presentations if needed. Med school classes are always looking for volunteer opps.

You can write any and all donations off on your taxes and you will be able to acess the value of your items so you will actually get a better return on your money this way. If you insist on selling try this site.

Donate them. Don't give these greedy bastards on here your expensive fishing gear for nothing. Trying to get kids involved in fishing with top notch gear would be way better than selling. These guys can go to bass pro like you did.
