the worst letdowns can't have had a full career

they were just never able to play... that is IMO you aren't as bad of a failure if you have the talent to at least be a real pro (vs you just couldn't compete)

i don't think that's the case at all.

If someone hypes you as potentially one of the future GREATEST 20 PLAYERS OF ALL TIME and you end up being a journeyman but playing 10 seasons.

I find that to be just as good a disparity in hype as...

Being a #1 pick with a bullet and being out of the league in 10 years.

In some ways, it's greater. because top draft picks fail all the time. But you don't hear too many people throw out potential GOATs.

Reggie was considered a potential all timer coming out.
