starting too? Sci Fi in general has never been looked on very favorably by Hollywood for as long as it has been there.

whenever a Sci Fi type movie comes out - the media almost certainly rates it low - which is why my opinion of what I see in the trailer dictates whether I go see it.

movie reviews pan movies all the time I enjoy. frick the movie reviewers

I'm just hoping this isn't like War of the Worlds (new version). The trailers were epic and then when the film came I was left very very disappointed.

New Star Trek...... But I get the point, the genre is usually snubbed. I hop this turns out great but I foresee it being like a 5th Element, Starship Troopers or Serenity .. great fun movies but not award winners.

Well the director has done ID4, 2012 and Day After Tomorrow. So it is a crap shoot.

hate to see this movie is getting bad reviews. i thought it had potential to be something special. looks as though it's just a slightly better version of Skyline.

I really try to avoid RT reviews since most of the critics go in hating the film and seem to be more focused on coming up with a clever one liner about their hatred for the movie.

More from Ebert that made me laugh.

Which means, I'm gonna go watch it, like it, and not tell a soul.

Critics aren't biased against a genre

Mainstream sci-fi is expensive. The movie going public doesn't like a challenge. Hollywood isn't paying unless the material is safe and formulaic - for example, aliens vs. humans. And critics don't like formulaic. There's your "bias." Great science fiction, in literature for example, is the opposite of safe.

That said, when Hollywood breaks the mold you have 2001, Blade Runner, Children of Men, etc etc. Also many examples of commercially and critically successful science fiction; Star Wars, Star Trek remake, Alien, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, etc

I'm going to head out in about 20-30 minutes to see it. The first theatrical trailer for Super 8 is suppose to be attached to it so I'll let you all know if it looks BA or not.

I worked on it, sets were cool, only saw the alien once. Hope it is at least respectable.

Off topic but did you get to work any on Green Lantern? I've heard the sets for that were epic. Like if a fanboy saw them he'd jizz himself.

My bad. I thought I read that he was the director. Not sure where I got that info.

So I just got back and the movie was pretty good. Those who are worried about over the top action with no substance need not worry. The only "flaw" in the movie was a rather cliche speech, but it wasn't anything spectacular or out of place. I'm going to avoid spoilers until more people see it, but if you do in with an open mind, willing to be entertained, you will enoy yourself.

As a sidenote, the trailer for Super 8 was very intriguing.

Saw the midnight showing of Battle: Los Angeles. It was exactly what I expected. And it was pretty damn good. Sure it had it's share of cheese but in terms of Alien invasion movies probably the best I have seen in about 20 years.

explain?

There is a wealth of good science fiction out there on which to base a movie. Instead, Hollywood gives us shite.

I'm starting to think that this is on purpose. They have talented enough writers, directors, artists, special effects artists, actors, etc to make good science fiction, but they consistently fail at it.
