The guns are on campus already just not in the hands of the right people.

Can someone ask this idiot one question: When have you ever seen/heard this headline, "Concealed Weapons Permit holder kills ___ people on rampage."

Just a heads up to everyone... I work in the Capitol, but it's been kind of hush-hush when the vote will come through on this.
On a related note, I posted in a thread the other day about being able to carry in the Texas State Capitol, which I found somewhat surprising. You can always tell which state reps are packing though.

I've thought about getting mine to carry here at work, but it just seems like a lot more trouble than it's worth. I really have no reason to with DPS and all the security around this place... and it's not like I'm somebody important.

Reading through the comments I am continually amazed at the mindset of those opposing this law.
The preception that a law has somehow made and continues to make all campuses gun free is ridiculous. The preception that the same people who have faithfully followed the law and not carried illegal guns on campus are now going to become violent killers and shooters due to an extension of their rights is simply idiotic.
Goodens statement that he is "offended" when persons tell him they would have shot the crazied lunitic at Virgina Tech just goes to show his biased anti gun retoric. It offends me that someone who has helped write policy cant do the simple math that 37 > 1.

The public opinion on this is certainly going to be skewed... They just think that more guns on campus means more shootings.
However, when you really sit down and look at it, only those 21 and up can carry. You're nixing probably over half of the campus enrollment right there. Then there are the limited few that would actually carry.
Just guesstimating, but what do you think the ratio would be of carry-not carry? 1-500? 1-1000? More?

I find carrying guns on campus foolish. Why? It is a BIG assumption to make that a kid would be able to calmly step up and take a guy out who was a threat. Perfect world the Virginia Tech shooter would have got off a couple shots and some student who had a CHL would have calmly been able to stand up and take him out. That is a lot to ask.
More realistic situation would be what happened in Austin this year being made worse by a number of students carrying guns. One kid with an AK-47 who obviously only wanted to kill himself after making some noise. He could have killed a shitload had he wanted to. Worse case scenario is this situation playing out with multiple armed students walking around possibly firing on anyone else they saw armed. Then when police hit campus they are trying to assess who is a threat from 100's of kids who all look alike. the possibility of everyone BUT the shooter being hurt seems likely.
BTW I am not anti-gun. I own 2 and am shopping for one or two more. Just question the notion that someone would be able to step up like Liam Neeson in Taken if some shite hit the fan.

Students only, I would assume the 21 and older rule will prohibit about 60% from carrying. Then I would guess that the vast majority of those carrying would be caucassion and predominantely male. So now we are limited to 18% assuming 90% caucasion enrollment. Of those I would guess maybe 15% would get the lisc and carry. That comes out to about 2.5% of students.
So I would guess somewhere in the range of 1 to 3 per 100. So of the 50,000 students maybe 100 CCL guns at UT
I would expect even lower numbers among faculty and staff so of the 16500 I would guess maybe 8 guns.
OMG OMG OMG! UT may have 108 guns on campus being carried by law abiding and trained citizens. OMG OMG OMG.

It doesn't take Liam Neeson to shoot a guy. For an example, look at the VT shooter. He was no Liam Neeson but he shot a buttload of people.
It's amazing to me that anyone could spend more than a couple of seconds thinking about it and still conclude that VT would probably have been just as bad if a few of the good kids there were legally carrying guns.

WTF
You have a really low opinion of people in general.

No, more realisitc situations would include the University of Iowa 1991, Columbine High School 1999, Virginia's Appalachian School of Law 2002, University of Arizona 2002, Dawson College 2006, Va. Tech 2007, Northern Illinois University 2008. We know how those ended without armed citizens involvement.
Of note, in the Law School incident, the shooter was collectively tackled by other students who calmly and collectively overcame their fears.
And here is a very realistic scenario involving

No he was not. But he did not have in training he made up for in being batshit crazy. Also, not giving a frick whether you live or die is beneficial if you want to shoot up a place.

People in a mob type scenario? Yep. I was home that day from work and the news had so many conflicting stories. God knows what was being said on campus.

Friendly fire can happen with trained combat soldiers. Couldn't it happen with scared shitless students as well?
