Also, a wide spread weapon seems like an awful choice for shooting out in public.

There are ways around this which I had done for my kids when they use 410's for there first deer. Take a 410 shell,open the end and dump the BB's out. From there, take a 12 ga 00 buck shell, open and take 5 of the pellets. Split the pellets about half way. From there, get some 30 lb test fishing line about 12" and crimp the pellets on it. Spreed them out even. Pack that back into the 410 shell and wax the end. This will keep the pellets from spreeding out.
We have 3 of the SS judges in my family. Using these shells, anything within 15 yards is DEAD or going to die! Good thing is that if one shoots this inside a house, sheetrock will stop it somewhat to the next room. That is what one should look for in home protection.
