That article is from a few days ago, when a refused raise raised the possibility of a work stoppage. According to a friend of mine who is a LHSAA official, officials in districts in Baton Rouge, Monroe, and Shreveport have already voted for the stoppage.

New Orleans and Thibodaux have yet to vote.

This has to do with a payraise the officials didn't get this year. Louisiana is currently 50th in how much they pay basketball officials.

It doesn't mention it in the article, but from what I've been hearing it's not just pay. It's forcing them to buy all new uniforms from a certain distributer that is the most expensive, having to attend more workshops, etc etc. Basically there are more factors here than just pay.

I may have missed it but I didn’t see where anyone calculated taxes into the expenses. I am in the 28% marginal income tax bracket. Officials are considered independent contractors so I have to pay both sides of Social Security on what I make, so my total tax liability is around 40%. After taxes and expenses I usually end up netting (getting to keep) 45 to 48 % of what I gross on an annual basis.

Many years ago I was a Louisiana high school basketball official. I now live in Florida and like someone else mentioned the high school varsity men are too fast for me as well. I still officiate other sports one of which is youth basketball. Last night I did 3 youth games that lasted about 1 hour each. I was out of the gym in a little less than 3 hours and will be paid $22 per game or $66 total. So my opinion is that $31 for a varsity game is terrible.

To the person that wrote, “...because no one is forcing them to officiate they choose to do it.” This is exactly what you are seeing. No one is forcing them to do it for $31 so some are choosing not to do it any longer.

I'm not going to read through all 15 pages but $31 to work a varsity game is ridiculous. When you figure in travel time and getting there around the start of the JV game you are looking at about 4 to 5 hours to ref what I deem the hardest of all sports to officiate.

I have been officiating Varsity level football and basketball for 8 years (some sm college bball) and we make $55 in basketball and $50-$62 in football depending on conference. For the meetings and camps we are required to attend each year and maintaining descent looking uniforms and new shoes each year there is no way in hell 30 bucks is worth your time.

Good luck to the LHSAA officials on getting the raise that you deserve. I would be after a hell of a lot larger raise than $8 though
