Pitt only made it to #2 after the bowl games. ND had been #2, and accepted the bid prior to the USC game, which they lost. At that point Fla. State jumped to #2 and they were in the Orange Bowl.

yeah, it was a different world, getting and taking bowl bids before the season was over. I remember LSU accepted a bid to the Orange Bowl in 82 a week before losing to 3-7 Tulane, in TS. I thought Pitt was # 2 going in, but that team was LOADED.
In any event, I don't think the Sugar Bowl would have taken TCU, unless they had to, but who knows. If they did and TCU beat AU, maybe they would have split or won it all if Oregon had lost. Some times it was fun with several teams maybe having a shot at the MNC going into the Bowls, but ultimatly I think its better having a true 1 v 2 match up.
