I kinda always thought Leaf got a raw deal. Drafted by schottenheimer, a grade a prick to a veteran team.
Marty wasn't coaching the Chargers when they drafted Leaf. hell, I don't think he was there when they drafted Brees and Tomlinson.

I also think Quijina Carter was a bigger bust than maybe all of them. I think he played 2 to 3 games tops before injured.

Why are people bringing up RBs and LBs in a QB bust thread?

The biggest draft QB bust is not J. Russel or Ryan Leaf. It is Matt Lienart. Russel and Ryan at least played for a season or multiple seasons. Heath Shuler was also a bigger disaster than Leaf and Russel. Get it right please.
Are you a LSU fan/alum???

Actually, that honor would have to go to Terry Baker, #1 overall pick in 1963. Look him up.

Pretty stupid comment by OP.... Leinart has not been great, or maybe good... but he really hasn't had much of a chance. I grew up in AZ and am (unfortunately) a Cardinals fan... as soon as Wisenhunt came it it was clear he did not like Leinart.
Leinart had a decent/good rookie year, and was then supplanted by a HOF quarterback. The situation was not optimal, and when he opened his mouth that it was personal he was just cut. He still has a chance to go out and find a starting job, and it is possible he will find one and turn out to be a decent QB. Unfortunately he is currently behind another very good QB, but probably he'll be traded or re-sign with so many teams needing help at that position. Again, as others have said, he was 10th in the draft, and wasn't even the first QB taken that year... I would agree "disappointing" is appropriate but not "bust". No way.
Russell is the biggest bust, IMHO. He was the first pick in the draft- which is not usually reserved for needs by any team, but for the best overall athlete. Leaf cannot claim that. And he's been terrible. And he's not even playing anymore, so he's done. As things stand, Leinart is still an NFL football player, and Russell is just a fat unemplyment benefit recipient.

I find that saying Russell was a bigger bust just because Leaf was #2 to be ridiculous. Russell is a huge bust not doubt at this point, but let's remember the Leaf situation. He was considered 1A/1B with Manning. It came down to preference for many many people on who should go first as I remember it. Also, it seemed that both were considered "can't miss" and for much of that college season were labeled 1A/1B for the draft. Jamarcus as I recall didn't start getting #1 hype until late and even when it became more obvious he would be the pick, still many doubted he would be successful, much more so than Leaf. That is why I have Leaf labeled a bigger bust, his hype as I recall it was much higher, and opinion more solidified of his future success.

the reason lienart is worse is:
1. you used a high draft pick for a back up qb
2. you have overpaid a guy to stand on the sideline instead of develop or fail and get off the books.
3. you cant really draft any more qbs until the guy inevitably tanks.

The raiders used a high pick on a guy who's not in the league anymore so what are you trying to get at?

he didn't like him because he didn't work hard
mostly the same flaw as JR IMO (although I like Leinarts vice of nailing co-eds more than JRs of drinking juice)
Between teh two franchises you'd LOVE to come to teh Arizona Cardinals with outstanding WRs and stable coaches... and HATE to go to teh Raiders with constant coaching turnover and instability from teh top down
JR is the bigger bust because he was drafted higher but Leinart definitely squandered teh better opportunity
