I would definitely play ME1 first. I actually enjoyed that one more because it had better RPG elements, like mentioned earlier in this thread.
If youre really eager to get to the second game (which IS more polished and has a better combat system), it's only the choices you make during the main storyline of ME1 that get carried over to ME2. If you really wanted, you could skip the side quests and finish ME1 in around 20 hours.

maybe its because i got the games off steam, but me2 would not pull over my me1 character.
so quick question about how the game changes based on your me1 choices... if you saved the council in me1 (ultimate paragon) is that still the case in me2?
the defaults for me2 with a male character are:
saved wrex
saved ashley, kaiden dies
sacrificed the destiny ascension (and the council) to focus on sovereign.
recommended udina to the council.
i know the wrex scenario and ashley/kaiden scenario will change based on your me1 choices, but will the rest ?
