How much did you enjoy both of these games? And where do they rank for you in terms of a game and its sequel?
I've only played Mass Effect 2...I just recently started Mass Effect and I'm enjoying it just as much as the 2nd one.
With that being said, I'm freaking pumped for Mass Effect 3.

Just finished one. It was sweet but short. Will start 2 in a bit.
The only thing I didn't like was all the useless shite id get in my inventory. Pain in the arse to sell or convert. Other than that I'd give it an A.

I enjoyed both of them, but I think I can appreciate the first one more as a whole. Second game took out a few of the RPG elements and they tried to make it just a little too streamlined. I hated the inventory system in ME1, but it seemed like they just totally scrapped the idea of inventory in the second game. I like some management of equipment and tweaking stats.
Also, the story in the second really doesn't seem like it goes a lot of places. You spend most of your time recruiting your team rather than advancing the story. The collectors plotline wasn't nearly as interesting as trying to hunt down Saren, IMO. The ending of the first game seemed to be on a much grander scale than ME2 especially with regard to some of the choices you can make at the end(Paragon/renegade choices).
I am interested to see how they plan to handle the Reapers in the third game. I hope that Earth doesn't play too pivotal of a role. It would be better to have a lot of skirmishes with the Reaper invasion at various planets/systems IMO.

After playing the first one I thought it was a solid game that I enjoyed thoroughly. After the second, I though holy crap this franchise is going to be epic and it made me enjoy the first game even more than I already did.

I did all the assignments that were available. Finished a little over 30 hours.

I felt the first game was better mainly due to more inventory and side missions and what not. I really like more choices and control in a game compared to a straight up here it is Arcade style of a game. (For example: Ghost Recon 1 & Tropic Thunder was better than the GR games preceding.)
With that being said I give due respect the story development of the second with the more characters and conversation options. I agreed with one statement regarding this that the Second game is made to set up the 3rd. What's funny is that the second was really concerned about who you were going to hook up with, haha.
