Yes, the thread title is misleading.

No, this thread does not advocate hiring him. I specifically do NOT want Stud hired as OC at LSU. If any other disclaimers need to be thrown in there, please assume they are posted in this thread. It's a bad idea.

That said, can someone explain to me why on Earth Stud being elevated to OC, with a good QB coach hired, would be such a bad idea?

A 30 second scan of his official bio shows him as the OC at Bowling Green from 2003 to 2006, including a year as associate HC. So if he was calling plays, he may have more playcalling experience than several of our current candidates:

Stud's Bio

Stud was the OC right after Urban Meyer left for Utah, under Urban's successor Gregg Brandon. I believe Brandon was Urban's OC, so it's not clear who was calling plays once Brandon was HC. But it would be hard to imagine Stud being given the associate HC title in 2006, after 3 years of being OC, if he was a mere figurehead and didn't call plays.

During that first 3 years, you could argue very easily that their offense was better under Brandon/Stud than under Urban/Brandon:

Bowling Green stats

2002 (last year under Urban/Brandon):

40.8 ppg, 219 rushing ypg, 230 passing, 57% completions

2003 (first under Brandon/Stud)

33.6 ppg, 196 rushing, 300 passing, 65%

2004

44.3 ppg, 168 rushing, 338 passing, 66%

2005

33.8 ppg, 144 rushing, 284 passing, 60%

(Omar Jacobs becomes an O'Brien Award semi-finalist,and make a disastrous decision to come out as a junior)

2006

19.5 ppg, 177 rusing, 169 passing, 56%

(this was the true frosh year of Tyler Sheehan, their eventual 10,000 yd career passing leader)

That last season was a stinker, but it has a pretty obvious reason for it. And again, I realize that Stud may have had nothing to do with calling plays, would not be a good hire for LSU, killed a man in Reno just to watch him die, etc. I get it. Miles should not hire him as LSU's next OC.

But based on the numbers, would hiring Stud be the apocalypse that everyone seems to think it would be?

ETA: halfway decent spelling

Stud would be the one hire that would upset me more than Kragthorpe. I don't want this guy coaching the o-line much less being the OC.

What do LSU fans want ? They want to run the football. What do offensive lineman love to do ? They love to run the football.

what was so wrong with the OL play in 2010? 09 was an abortion, but I thought they played pretty strong this yr

the line was better this year but that doesn't mean he should be promoted to oc. he and krag will be horrible hires. we need some new blood at LSU

Don't know how much more insight you need. Our offensive line sucked the past two seasons. If need it broken down beyond that, give Dr. Lou a call.

i was fine with him staying because of the killer recruiting class and the fact of gary leaving. part of that will be ruined if stud or krag get hired here.

i can wait out billy g even though i think its a bad idea to let him take over on the eve of a possible nc run. personally les waited way to long to fire gary. it should have been done right after the arky game

I never said he should be promoted to OC, just that they'd gotten better. I wasn't a big Stud fan coming into this yr, and who knows how much was because of Wilkerson's presence, but those guys stepped up this year. especially in light of the right side seeming to be in flux with the injuries. the fat man seems to have us headed in the right direction.

now let's get Steve Logan or Ralph Friedgen in here to take us to the promised land!

'08 was actually the most disappointing year to me. 4 returning starters from the championship team that could run on anybody. The running game wasn't horrible with Scott but the pass protection often sucked. '09 was an obvious rebuilding year, lot of sacks(yes partly due to JJ's poor pocket presence) couldn't run well. 2010 was actually a nice upgrade and finished on a high note. Next year's line promises to be back to championship caliber so I'm not sure now would be a good time to send Stud packing. As for as OC goes, Les should be able to lure in a serious upgrade.

Everyone wants some 'big name' hire at OC, but in the end, isn't the most important thing production on the field and score more points?? We had the worse offense in the SEC two years running under Crowton, so when you think about it, ANYONE should be an improvement. And, does anyone relly thinks Miles will hire some clown at OC unless he was really sure?? Everyone should just trust Miles and forget all the meltdown talk...
